Ain El Berd
Sidi Bel Abbes, Algeria
About Ain El Berd
Aïn El Berd is a town in the northern plains of Sidi Bel Abbès Province in northwestern Algeria, set in the cultivated farming country toward the northeast of the province. It is the seat of a daïra (district) and a local centre for the surrounding agricultural communes. Its name, meaning roughly "the cold spring" in Arabic, points to the water sources that have long supported settlement and farming in the area.
The town belongs to the productive northern plains of the province, a country of grain fields, market gardens, and orchards. It is a working provincial settlement rather than a tourist destination, of interest mainly for travellers wishing to experience everyday rural western Algeria and its farming landscape.
The climate is semi-arid and continental, with hot, dry summers and cool winters. Spring and autumn are the most agreeable seasons, when the plains are green or in harvest; the heat of midsummer is best avoided for outdoor travel.
