About Bethioua
Bethioua is a coastal town in Oran Province, in north-western Algeria, lying on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Arzew. It sits within the heavily industrialised belt that runs east from the city of Oran toward Arzew and Mostaganem, and its modern identity is bound up with that industry: Bethioua is one of the principal sites of Algeria's petrochemical and natural-gas sector, home to large gas-liquefaction (LNG) and processing complexes that feed the export terminals of the Arzew industrial zone. For most visitors it is a working town rather than a resort, and travel here is overwhelmingly business- or industry-related.
What gives Bethioua deeper historical interest is its location atop the ancient Roman port of Portus Magnus. The site, also known in the colonial era as Saint-Leu and locally tied to the name Bettioua, was a Roman settlement on this stretch of the Mediterranean coast, and the surrounding area has yielded mosaics and other Roman-era remains, some of which are held in the museum collections of Oran. The town's present-day name is also associated with the Bettioua community, of Rifian Berber origin, who settled in this part of the Oran coast.
The climate is Mediterranean: hot, dry summers and mild, comparatively wet winters. Late spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) are the most comfortable times to visit, avoiding both the summer heat and the heavier rains of midwinter. Bethioua is a small, low-rise town; orientation is straightforward, with the coast and the industrial port zone to the north and the road to Oran and Arzew defining the main axis of movement.

By Plane
The nearest airport is Oran Es Sénia – Ahmed Ben Bella International Airport (IATA: ORN), located on the south side of Oran roughly 40 km or more to the west, depending on the route. It is the main gateway for the whole Oran region, with domestic flights to Algiers and other Algerian cities and international connections to France and other European and regional destinations. From the airport the practical way to reach Bethioua is by taxi or pre-arranged car transfer; agree the fare with the driver before departing, as metering is not consistently used.
By Train
By Car / Road
Road is the normal way to reach Bethioua. It lies east of Oran along the coastal industrial corridor, roughly 40 km away, and is very close to Arzew, the larger port town immediately to the west. Driving from Oran takes on the order of an hour depending on traffic through the industrial zones. The town is also reachable from Mostaganem to the east. Intercity buses and shared taxis (louages) link Oran and Arzew with the smaller coastal towns of the province; for Bethioua specifically, connections typically run via Arzew or Oran.
Bethioua is small enough to cover on foot within its core, and most movement beyond the town is by car. There is no metro or tram. Local transport relies on taxis, shared taxis (louages), and regional buses connecting to Arzew and Oran. Ride-hailing app coverage in Algeria is concentrated in the larger cities and should not be relied upon here. As with much of Algeria, fix the price with a taxi driver before setting off, and carry cash in Algerian dinars, as card acceptance is limited outside major centres.
Things to do
- Portus Magnus archaeological site — the remains of the Roman port town on which Bethioua stands, of interest to those drawn to ancient history. Significant finds from the area, including Roman mosaics, are conserved and displayed in Oran's museum collections rather than on an extensively developed on-site museum, so set expectations accordingly and consider pairing a visit with the museums in Oran.
- Gulf of Arzew coastline — the Mediterranean shoreline along the gulf, shared with neighbouring Arzew, offers sea views, though much of the immediate coast here is given over to port and industrial use.
Bethioua is an industrial town rather than a leisure destination, so organised tourist activities are limited. The most rewarding use of time is a day trip combining the Roman heritage with the wider Oran coast: explore the archaeological associations of Portus Magnus, then continue west to Arzew and Oran for beaches, seafront promenades, and the cultural sights of the regional capital. Sea air, coastal drives, and the working spectacle of one of Algeria's major energy ports characterise the area more than packaged tourism.

Ask on WhatsAppFood & Dining
Food in Bethioua is local and unpretentious, reflecting western Algerian Mediterranean cooking: dishes built around fresh fish and seafood from the gulf, couscous, tajines, grilled meats, and the spicy-savoury flavours common to the Oran region. Bread and cafés are everywhere, and meals are typically halal as standard across Algeria. For a wider choice of restaurants across price tiers, including dedicated seafood dining, nearby Arzew and the city of Oran offer far more options than the town itself.
Cafes & Nightlife
Non-alcoholic drinks dominate everyday life: mint tea, strong coffee, and soft drinks are served in cafés that double as social hubs. Algeria is a predominantly Muslim country and alcohol is not widely or openly sold, especially in smaller towns like Bethioua; where available it is generally limited to licensed venues and hotels in larger cities such as Oran. Tap water quality varies; bottled water is the safe and widely used choice for drinking.

Accommodation within Bethioua itself is limited, and most visitors base themselves in Arzew or Oran, which have a far wider range of hotels across all tiers and are only a short drive away.
What to buy
Everyday shopping in Bethioua is served by local shops and markets supplying residents and the industrial workforce; this is a place to buy daily necessities rather than souvenirs. For local crafts, traditional textiles, ceramics, and a fuller range of goods, the markets and shops of Oran and Arzew are the realistic destination. Bargaining is common in informal markets across the region, while fixed prices apply in modern shops. Carry cash in Algerian dinars.
