About Foggaret Ezzaouia

Foggaret Ezzaouia (also written Foggaret Ez Zoua or Foggaret el Zoua) is a small Saharan oasis settlement and commune in In Salah Province, in the Tidikelt region of central Algeria. Its very name carries the signature of the region: a foggara is the traditional underground irrigation gallery that taps groundwater and carries it by gravity to the palm gardens, and it is exactly these channels — together with the date palms they feed — that make settlement possible here in the open desert.

Foggaret Ezzaouia is a quiet rural oasis rather than a tourist town. Life centres on the palmery and its irrigated plots, set against the immense backdrop of the central Sahara's sand and stony plains. The "ezzaouia" element of the name points to the religious and scholarly lodges (zawiyas) that have historically anchored such oasis communities. Visitors come for the authenticity of Tidikelt oasis life and the desert landscape, not for monuments or amenities.

The climate is extreme desert: searing summers, with daytime highs comfortably above 40°C from late spring into early autumn, and mild winters that turn cold at night. The practical window for visiting is roughly November to February. As everywhere in the deep Sahara, carry plenty of water, guard against sun and glare, and time activity for the cooler hours.

How to reach

By Plane

The nearest airport is In Salah Airport (IATA: INZ), serving the provincial capital, from which Foggaret Ezzaouia is reached by road. In Salah's flights are limited and mostly domestic, chiefly to Algiers, and run on sparse seasonal schedules — confirm before relying on them. Continue from the airport by taxi or arranged transfer.

By Train

By Car / Road

Road, via the provincial capital In Salah and the trans-Saharan road network of the Tidikelt, is the practical way in. Distances are long and the country remote, so travel with a dependable vehicle, plenty of fuel and water, and ideally a local driver or guide familiar with current conditions; sand drift can affect the road. Travel in Algeria's far south may require permits and an escort — verify current regulations before setting out.

Foggaret Ezzaouia is a small oasis settlement easily covered on foot. There is no public transport, metro or ride-hailing; movement beyond the village is by private vehicle or by taxi arranged from In Salah. Walk during the cooler hours, carry water, and stay in shade where possible.

Things to do

  • The palmery and foggara irrigation — the date-palm gardens and the underground water channels that give the place its name; the defining sight of the oasis and a fine illustration of traditional Saharan water engineering.

  • The desert surroundings — the open Tidikelt landscape of sand and stone, at its most beautiful and bearable at sunrise and sunset.

  • Walk the palm gardens and trace the foggara channels to see how the oasis is watered.

  • Experience quiet oasis life in a small Tidikelt community far from any tourist circuit.

  • Use it as a low-key Saharan stop when travelling the deep south of Algeria, ideally with a local guide who can interpret the landscape and the irrigation system.

Food & Dining

Eating here means simple local Saharan and Algerian home cooking — dates, couscous and other semolina dishes, bread, and grilled or stewed meat where available, all halal in keeping with the region. There is no restaurant scene; meals are most likely arranged with hosts or through a guide. Vegetarians can usually manage with bread, vegetables, couscous and dates.

Cafes & Nightlife

The everyday drink is strong, sweet mint tea served in small glasses, with coffee and bottled soft drinks. As a deep-Saharan settlement, expect non-alcoholic drinks only. Drink water constantly to stave off dehydration, and rely on bottled or properly treated water rather than untreated well or tap water.
