About Zelfana
Zelfana is an oasis town in the east of Ghardaïa Province, Saharan Algeria, set on the desert plateau a little under 70 km east of Ghardaïa. It is best known for its natural thermal hot springs, which give the town its distinctive identity and draw visitors seeking the warm mineral waters. Around the springs the town has developed as a small spa and oasis settlement, with date-palm gardens softening the surrounding stony desert.
For travellers, Zelfana offers something different from the historic Mozabite ksour of the M'zab Valley: a relaxed oasis town built around its thermal baths rather than around medieval architecture. It is a popular weekend and day-trip destination for the warm springs, and a pleasant stop for those touring the wider Ghardaïa region. As elsewhere in the area, the local culture is conservative, and visitors should dress and behave modestly.
The climate is Saharan — very hot summers (often above 40°C) and mild winters with cold nights. The cooler months of October to April are the most comfortable, and the warm springs are especially appealing in the cool of winter.

By Train
By Car / Road
Zelfana lies about 70 km east of Ghardaïa, the regional road and bus hub, on the route toward Ouargla. Reach Ghardaïa by long-distance bus from Algiers (around 10 hours), Sétif, Biskra and other cities, then continue to Zelfana by local bus or shared/private taxi across the desert.
Zelfana is a small town and easily covered on foot, particularly the area around the thermal baths and the palm gardens. For getting to and from Ghardaïa and other towns in the region, use shared or private taxis or local buses. Agree a fare before setting off, and dress and behave modestly in keeping with the conservative local culture.
Things to do
- The thermal hot springs — Zelfana's defining attraction, natural warm mineral waters developed into bathing facilities; the reason most visitors come.
- The palm-grove oasis — the date-palm gardens surrounding the town, a green contrast to the desert plateau.
The main thing to do in Zelfana is to bathe in the thermal hot springs, valued locally for their warm mineral waters and a relaxing contrast to a day of desert travel. Beyond the springs, the palm-grove gardens are pleasant to walk, especially in the cooler hours. Zelfana works well as a relaxing stop on a tour of the Ghardaïa region or on the road between Ghardaïa and Ouargla.

Dining in Zelfana is at simple local eateries serving Saharan staples: couscous with lamb or vegetables, clay-oven flatbreads, soups and the excellent local dates. There are no formal tourist restaurants; the food is everyday and home-style. As a conservative Muslim town, food is halal and modest conduct around dining is expected.
Cafes & Nightlife
The local drink is tea — strong, sweet and often mint-flavoured — together with coffee, served in local cafés and as a gesture of hospitality. Bottled water is recommended for visitors. As a conservative town, alcohol is absent from local life.
