About Tenes

Ténès is a small Mediterranean port town on the north coast of Chlef Province, in northwestern Algeria, where the dry hills of the Dahra meet the sea. It is the coastal counterpart to the inland provincial capital of Chlef, about 50 km to the south, and combines a working fishing and commercial harbour with a quiet seaside character and an unusually long history for a town of its modest size.

The site has been inhabited and traded over for millennia. There was a Phoenician/Punic trading post here, succeeded by a Roman settlement (Cartennae), and the area later passed through Berber, Arab, and Ottoman hands before the French built a new town in the 19th century. The result is a town in three layers: the medieval and older quarter known as Vieux Ténès (Old Ténès), set up on the heights with narrow lanes, a historic mosque, and remnants of fortification; the 19th-century colonial-era town; and the modern harbour and seafront below. This depth of history, plus the dramatic meeting of mountains and Mediterranean, is what makes Ténès worth the detour.

The climate is Mediterranean: hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters, moderated at the coast by sea breezes that make Ténès noticeably more pleasant in high summer than the baking Chelif valley inland. Peak season is summer (July–August), when Algerians come for the beaches; spring and early autumn are quieter and very comfortable for walking the old town and the shore.

How to reach

By Plane

There is no airport at Ténès. The nearest international gateways are Algiers's Houari Boumediene Airport (IATA: ALG), roughly 230–250 km to the east, and Oran's Ahmed Ben Bella Airport (IATA: ORN) to the west. From either, travel overland — most logically via Chlef, then north to the coast by road.

By Train

Ténès is not on the main Algiers–Oran railway. The nearest useful railhead is Chlef, on the SNTF national line; from Chlef continue to Ténès by road (bus or shared taxi).

By Car / Road

Road is the way to reach Ténès. From Chlef it is roughly 50–55 km / about 1 hour north over the hills to the coast on the provincial road. The scenic coastal road (the corniche) also links Ténès with other Dahra coast towns east and west. Buses and shared "louage" taxis run between Chlef and Ténès through the day, leaving when full; self-driving gives the most freedom to enjoy the coastal scenery, though mountain sections are winding.

Ténès is small and the lower town, harbour, and seafront are easily walked. The old quarter (Vieux Ténès) sits above the new town and involves a climb on foot or a short taxi ride. Petit-taxis are available for hops between the harbour, the beaches, and the old town; agree the fare before you set off. There is no metro or formal urban bus network of note; for nearby beaches and villages, shared taxis and minibuses are the norm. Carry cash in Algerian dinar, as card payment is rare.

Things to do

  • Vieux Ténès (Old Ténès) — the historic hilltop quarter, with narrow winding streets, traditional houses, an old mosque, and remnants of walls and gates; the most atmospheric part of town and the best place to sense its long history.

  • Old (Sidi Merouane / grand) mosque — a historic mosque in the old quarter, one of the oldest religious buildings in the region; respect prayer times and dress modestly if visiting.

  • Ténès lighthouse (Phare de Ténès) — the landmark lighthouse on the headland, marking the harbour entrance, with sweeping views over the Mediterranean and the coastline.

  • The harbour and fishing port — a working port where the catch comes in; pleasant to watch the boats and buy fresh fish.

  • Roman / ancient remains (Cartennae) — scattered traces of the ancient settlement; ask locally, as remains are limited and not always signposted.

  • Beaches and the corniche — the coastline around Ténès has beaches and rocky coves, with the coastal road offering dramatic sea-and-mountain views.

  • Wander Vieux Ténès — the single best thing to do: lose yourself in the old streets and take in the views from the heights.

  • Swim and relax on the beaches — in summer the town's beaches and nearby coves are the main draw; the sea here is the reason most Algerian visitors come.

  • Drive the corniche — follow the coastal road east and west for scenic Mediterranean views and a string of small coastal spots.

  • Eat fresh seafood by the harbour — buying and eating the day's catch is an experience in itself.

  • Watch the fishing fleet — early morning and late afternoon around the port are the liveliest times.

Food & Dining

Being a fishing port, Ténès leans on seafood more than the inland towns of the province. Expect grilled and fried fish, sardines, and shellfish alongside the staples of Algerian cuisine — couscous, chorba (spiced soup), tajines, grilled meats, and merguez. Bread accompanies everything, and meals are overwhelmingly halal by default. Vegetarians can usually find vegetable couscous, salads, and bean or lentil dishes; ask at simpler places.

  • Harbour-side fish eateries — simple restaurants and grills near the port serving the freshest catch; the obvious choice in Ténès.
  • Rotisseries (rôtisseries) in town — roast chicken, grilled meats, and chips at low prices.
  • Family restaurants in the lower town — for couscous, tajine, and chorba in a sit-down setting.
  • Cafés and patisseries — for coffee, mint tea, and Algerian sweets.

Cafes & Nightlife

As across Algeria, the everyday drinks are mint tea, strong coffee, fresh juices, and soft drinks, enjoyed in the town's cafés — pleasant here with a sea view. Bottled water is widely sold and is the safe choice for drinking; avoid tap water. Alcohol is not openly part of daily life in this conservative coastal town and is little sold outside licensed hotels; discretion is appropriate.

Places to Stay

Accommodation in Ténès is limited and oriented to summer beach visitors; it is busiest and dearest in July–August, when booking ahead is wise. Cash is usually expected.

  • Budget: simple guesthouses and basic seasonal lodgings near the town and beaches offer the cheapest beds; standards are modest, so check the room first.
  • Mid-range: a small number of coastal hotels and holiday complexes cater to summer visitors with en-suite rooms and sea access; these fill in high season.
  • Upscale / heritage: genuine upscale or heritage options are scarce in Ténès; for higher-end comfort, travellers often stay in Chlef, Algiers, or a larger coastal city and visit Ténès as a day or overnight trip.

What to buy

Shopping in Ténès is modest and local. The catch of the day — fresh fish and seafood — is the standout buy, sold at and around the harbour. In the town's small shops and any market you will find everyday goods, produce from the surrounding farmland, olives and olive oil, and basic crafts. Bargaining is acceptable for fresh produce and non-fixed-price goods and is part of the exchange; fixed-price shops do not haggle. Bring cash in dinar.

  • Cherchell (~120 km / about 2 hours east) — a coastal town with significant Roman ruins (ancient Caesarea) and an archaeological museum.
  • Tipaza (~150 km / about 2.5 hours east) — UNESCO-listed Roman and Phoenician ruins set spectacularly on the Mediterranean shore.
  • Algiers (~230–250 km / about 3.5 hours east) — the capital, with the Casbah (UNESCO World Heritage), seafront, and national museums.
  • Oran (~200 km / about 3 hours west) — Algeria's vibrant second city, with forts, seafront, and a famous music culture.
