About Mogheul
Mogheul (also written Mougheul) is a small commune and oasis village in Béchar Province, set in the rocky desert country northwest of the provincial capital Béchar in southwestern Algeria. Like the other small communes around Béchar, it is a traditional palm-grove and farming settlement rather than a tourist town, sustained by groundwater and springs amid the arid plains and low mountains at the edge of the Saharan Atlas. For travellers it offers a quiet, authentic glimpse of rural Saharan oasis life away from the main routes.
The village's character is rural and traditional, with date palms, small farms, an old mud-brick quarter, and a local mosque. There are no major monuments; the appeal lies in the contrast of green oasis against stark desert and the slow rhythm of a small community. Most visitors see Mogheul only as part of a wider exploration of the Béchar region or while passing through.
The climate is hot desert: summers (June to September) are very hot, often above 40°C, while winters are mild by day and cold at night. The comfortable season is October to April. The settlement is small and centred on its palm grove and the road through it.

By Plane
The nearest airport is Boudghene Ben Ali Lotfi Airport (IATA: CBH) in Béchar, the provincial capital nearby, with domestic flights from Algiers and Oran. From Béchar, continue to Mogheul by road; taxi fares are negotiated in advance rather than metered.
By Train
By Car / Road
Mogheul is reached by road from Béchar, the regional hub, on paved routes across desert and rocky terrain to the northwest of the city. From Oran it is roughly 600 km via the N6 to Béchar and then a local hop, best broken with a stop in Béchar. Shared taxis and minibuses serve the communes around Béchar; the simplest plan is to base in Béchar and travel out by road.
Mogheul is a small village easily covered on foot around its centre and palm grove. There is little formal local transport; for getting here and back, or for exploring the surrounding desert and hills, use a taxi or a hired car with a driver arranged in Béchar. Fares are agreed in advance. A local guide is helpful for any excursions into the desert.
Things to do
- The palm grove (palmeraie) — the date palms and gardens that sustain the oasis, the green heart of the village and the most pleasant place to walk.
- The old village quarter — the traditional mud-brick part of the settlement, evocative of long-established Saharan oasis architecture.
- The surrounding desert and mountain landscape — the rocky hills and hammada plains around Mogheul, characteristic of the northwestern Béchar region and striking in the soft light of early morning and late afternoon.
Mogheul is a place to absorb the calm of a small Saharan oasis rather than to tick off attractions. Walk the palm grove and the old quarter, watch desert life, and use the village as a quiet stop on a wider exploration of the Béchar region. The province's headline destinations — the dunes of Taghit, the ksar of Kénadsa, and the Saoura valley — are reached via Béchar. Any trip into the open desert should be made with a knowledgeable local guide.

Ask on WhatsAppFood & Dining
Eating is simple and local: home-style Saharan and Algerian cooking rather than restaurants. Expect couscous, grilled meats, bread (khobz), and date-based dishes. For a proper choice of restaurants, eat in Béchar. Practical recommendations:
- Small local eateries — basic, inexpensive meals where available in the commune.
- Bring provisions — many travellers carry food and water from Béchar.
- Dine in Béchar — the realistic sit-down option, including hotel restaurants such as El Djazira Hotel.
Food is halal as standard; vegetarians can rely on couscous, vegetables, bread, and dates.
Cafes & Nightlife
As a small conservative oasis village, Mogheul has no bars and alcohol is not available. The customary drink is sweet mint tea, along with coffee, served in homes and any small café. Soft drinks and bottled water can be bought in local shops. Drink bottled water rather than tap water, and carry plenty given the heat.

- Mid-range: the dependable base is Béchar nearby, where El Djazira Hotel (☏ +213 49 22 07 70) and other central hotels offer reliable rooms.
- Upscale / heritage: for a more atmospheric overnight in the region, head to the dune-facing hotels of Taghit, south of Béchar.
What to buy
There is no formal shopping district — just small shops and any local market serving the commune. The main local product is dates from the palm grove. For handicrafts and a fuller range of goods, the larger souk in Béchar is the place to shop. Gentle bargaining is normal where goods are sold informally. Stock up on water and supplies in Béchar before coming.
