Annaba

Annaba is a province in the far northeast of Algeria, fronting the Mediterranean where the Tell Atlas mountains tumble down to a string of coves and sandy bays. Its eponymous capital, Annaba, is the country's fourth-largest city and the major industrial and port hub of the east, long known for its steelworks at El Hadjar and its busy commercial harbour. Yet the province wears its industry lightly: the coastline is generous, the hills behind the city are forested and green, and the cultural depth runs back two thousand years to the Roman city of Hippo Regius, where Saint Augustine served as bishop.

For travellers, Annaba is one of Algeria's most rewarding coastal destinations precisely because it layers so much into a small area. The provincial capital combines French colonial boulevards, an Ottoman-era kasbah, the imposing hilltop Basilica of Saint Augustine, and the excavated ruins of Hippo Regius all within easy reach of one another. Beyond the city, the Edough massif rises sharply to the village of Seraïdi, while the rocky headland of Cap de Garde and the fishing town of Chetaïbi offer dramatic Mediterranean scenery.

The province is compact and densely settled, with the capital surrounded by satellite towns such as El Bouni, Sidi Amar, and the industrial centre of El Hadjar. This makes it easy to base yourself in the city and explore outward, whether to the mountain air of Seraïdi, the beaches along the corniche, or the quieter agricultural communes inland toward Aïn Berda and Berrahal.

The best months to visit Annaba are late spring (May and June) and early autumn (September and October), when the Mediterranean climate is at its most agreeable: warm, sunny days, sea temperatures comfortable for swimming, and far fewer crowds than the peak of summer. July and August bring the most reliable beach weather but also the heaviest local holiday crowds, with Algerian families flocking to the corniche and the coastal resorts; accommodation is tightest and prices highest then.

Winters are mild and wet by Algerian standards — the Edough mountains catch a good deal of rain, keeping the hills around Seraïdi lush and green — but it is the season least suited to the beach. If your focus is the historical sites of Hippo Regius and the basilica, the cooler months from November to March are perfectly pleasant for sightseeing, with comfortable temperatures for walking the ruins and the old town.

Within the city of Annaba, taxis are the easiest and most efficient way to get around and are readily available throughout the centre. A network of city bus routes connects downtown Annaba with the outer neighbourhoods and surrounding suburbs such as El Bouni and Sidi Amar, and a shuttle bus links the airport with the city centre.

For travel within the province, shared taxis (taxis inter-wilayas) are the workhorse of Algerian road transport and run from the long-distance taxi station about 1 km south of the railway station, serving destinations across the region. The mountain village of Seraïdi sits roughly 13 km from downtown and is reached by a winding road up the Edough massif; taxis make the climb regularly. Coastal Chetaïbi and the headland of Cap de Garde are likewise reached by road, the latter a short drive northwest of the city onto the peninsula.

Annaba is also a transport gateway for the wider east: the SNTF railway runs daily services to Algiers and other major cities, plus an international train to Tunis several times a week, and Annaba Rabah Bitat Airport (AAE) handles domestic flights to Algiers and Oran along with intermittent international service.

Annaba shares the rich culinary traditions of northeastern Algeria, with seafood naturally to the fore given the province's long coastline and active fishing fleet. The signature local specialty is bourek, the Algerian savoury pastry roll — a thin filo-style wrapper filled with minced meat, egg, or cheese and fried crisp. The east of the country, and Annaba especially, is celebrated for its bourek, and it appears everywhere from street stalls to home tables, particularly during Ramadan.

As across Algeria, the locally made pizza sold at neighbourhood cafés and restaurants is a genuine pleasure — thin, light, and closer to the Italian style than heavy Western versions. The city has a dense scene of small family-owned cafés and restaurants throughout town, while the fancier establishments cluster along La Corniche and near the major beaches, where seafood dishes are the natural order. A coffee and croissant at a pavement café — a legacy of the French era — remains a quintessential Annaba ritual, and the central square, Le Cours (Cours de la Révolution), is lined with cafés and ice-cream parlours.

For drinks, Algerian mint tea ("atay") is the everyday standard served in cafés, and the province follows the usual national pattern.

Annaba's cultural identity is defined by its extraordinary layering of civilisations. The Roman city of Hippo Regius was one of the most important centres of early Christianity in North Africa, the seat where Saint Augustine — one of the most influential thinkers of the late Roman world — served as bishop in the fourth and fifth centuries. The monumental Basilica of Saint Augustine, built by the French on the hill overlooking the ancient ruins, remains a pilgrimage site and the city's most recognisable landmark; it is said to hold a relic of the saint.

The old city contributes further heritage: a 12th-century kasbah on the hill east of Place d'Armes, with narrow Ottoman-era alleys and walkways, and the Salah Bey Mosque dating from 1792. French colonial architecture defines the central boulevards, creating the striking contrast of old and new that gives the city its character.
