About Fushë-Arrëz

Fushë-Arrëz is a small mountain town of around 3,500 in Shkodër County, north-eastern Albania, set on a high plateau (around 600 m) on the old SH5 road between Pukë (~25 km west) and Kukës (~70 km east). It was developed in the communist era around a now-defunct copper-processing plant that drew on the chrome and copper mines of the surrounding Pulati / Iballë mountains; today the town is quiet and depopulated, with a clear post-industrial atmosphere of empty workshops and faded apartment blocks. The surrounding mountains, however, are among the most pristine and least-visited in Albania, with extensive beech forests, alpine lakes and excellent hiking potential — the Iballë area in particular is gaining recognition as one of the country's wild-tourism frontiers.

For travellers, Fushë-Arrëz is a niche stop on the old SH5 mountain road, with appeal for visitors interested in 20th-century industrial heritage, very off-the-beaten-track hiking, and slow drives between the Albanian Alps and the Kosovo border. Climate is high-mountain continental — cool summers, cold snowy winters.
