Good to Know

June is low season

Traveling in June means thinner crowds and better rates, but occasional monsoon showers on the islands. Boat tours can shift with weather, so keep a flexible day in Phuket.

Book the sell-out experiences early

The ethical elephant sanctuary books out 2-4 weeks ahead year-round. Most other Chiang Mai activities (Doi Suthep, temples, walking streets) are easy walk-ups or Grab rides on the day.

Getting around Chiang Mai

The city is flat and very Grab-friendly; red songthaew shared trucks run anywhere in the Old City and Nimman for a flat fare. Old City temples are all within a 1 km walk.

Time the walking streets

The Saturday (Wualai Road) and Sunday (Ratchadamnoen Road) walking streets only run on their namesake nights. Line up Chiang Mai days to catch at least one; the Sunday market is the larger of the two.

Shopping and VAT refunds

Carry Thai baht cash for Pratunam stalls (cheaper than card) and your passport at the outlets. Collect P.P.10 forms for purchases over 2,000 baht per shop to claim the ~7% VAT refund at the airport.
