Ancient Rome, Renaissance Florence and the canals of Venice on the high-speed rail spine
View Day-by-DayThe four intercity legs run on a Eurail Italy Pass (2nd class, 4 travel days): Milan-Rome ~3h, Rome-Florence 1h 35m, Florence-Venice ~2h 10m, Venice-Milan 2h 28m. Book Trenitalia (Frecciarossa), not Italo, and reserve pass-holder seats in advance (~€13 pp per high-speed leg) as quotas are limited.
Peak Italian summer. 15 August is Ferragosto, Italy's biggest holiday; arriving in Milan that afternoon is calm and easy, and the Venice nights fall comfortably clear of the peak.
Expect 29-34 C in Milan, Rome and Florence, a little fresher in Venice with the lagoon breeze; short afternoon thunderstorms are possible. Long daylight (sunset ~20:15). Pack breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes and a light cover for shoulders and knees, required for the Vatican, St Mark's and the Duomo.
A tourist city tax is payable in cash at each hotel, roughly €108 total across the five stays for two travellers.
A single Italy Schengen visa covers the whole trip. Flying in and out of Milan makes it a loop, so all four cities are seen without backtracking.
