Thermal baths, glowing Christmas markets and Art Nouveau grandeur in the heart of the city
View Day-by-DayBudapest's Advent markets at Vorosmarty Square and St Stephen's Basilica run through December, at their most atmospheric after dark with lights and mulled wine.
December is cold, often near or below freezing, with early sunsets. Pack warm layers, a windproof coat and comfortable walking shoes for cobbled streets.
Bring a swimsuit, flip-flops and a towel for the thermal baths; the outdoor pools at Szechenyi are especially memorable steaming in the winter air.
The historic centre is very walkable, and the metro, trams and the historic Millennium Underground make longer hops quick and cheap.
Hungary uses the forint (HUF). Cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for market stalls and smaller cafes.
