Why visit?

Dhamar is a highland governorate in western Yemen, situated on a dramatic plateau approximately 2,400 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest inhabited regions in the country. The capital city, Dhamar, sprawls across a wide mountain ridge and is known for its cool climate, expansive views, and a landscape dotted with ancient stone towers and terraced farms. The governorate's terrain is characterized by rugged mountain ridges, deep wadis, and fertile highland plateaus where wheat, barley, qat, and fruit orchards have been cultivated for millennia.

The region has a storied history as a center of Zaydi Islamic learning, with numerous historic mosques, madrasas, and libraries dating back centuries. The area around Dhamar city is particularly noted for its concentration of ancient tower houses and fortified structures that speak to the region's wealth and strategic importance during the pre-modern period. For travelers, Dhamar offers an accessible yet remarkably authentic highland experience, with well-preserved traditional architecture and a strong sense of cultural continuity that is increasingly rare in the broader region.

When is the best time to visit?

The optimal visiting period for Dhamar is from October through March, when the highland climate is cool and dry, with daytime temperatures between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius and cold nights that can approach freezing. Spring (March to May) brings rainfall that greens the terraced landscapes, though it can make some secondary roads slippery. Summer (June to September) is warm but significantly cooler than the coastal lowlands, with temperatures rarely exceeding 30 degrees Celsius on the plateau. The weekly souqs (markets) in various towns operate year-round and provide a reliable cultural experience regardless of season. Given the ongoing security situation in Yemen, travelers should verify conditions before planning visits.

How do you get around?

Dhamar is well connected to Sana'a by a paved highway approximately 100 kilometers to the north, a journey of roughly two hours by car or bus. The highway also continues southward toward Ibb and Aden, making Dhamar a natural stopping point on the main north-south route through Yemen's highlands. Within the governorate, shared minibuses and taxis connect the capital with towns such as Maabar, Jahran, Anss, Utmah, and Wusab Al Ali. Roads between major settlements are generally paved, though some secondary routes are unpaved. There is no rail infrastructure in the governorate. A private vehicle or hired driver provides the most flexibility for exploring the surrounding highland villages and archaeological sites.

What should you eat?

Dhamar's cuisine reflects the hearty traditions of Yemen's highlands, built around slow-cooked stews, fresh bread, and locally grown produce. Saltah is the signature dish — a rich, bubbling stew of meat, vegetables, and fenugreek froth, typically served with bread for dipping. Mandi (rice with slow-smoked meat) is prepared for special occasions, while daily meals often feature aseedah (a thick porridge of flour and ghee) accompanied by honey or savory toppings. The governorate's highland orchards produce excellent pomegranates, grapes, and figs, which appear in seasonal dishes. Luhuh, a spongy fermented bread, is a regional specialty. Qat chewing is deeply embedded in social life, with post-lunch and evening sessions being the primary form of community interaction.

What is the culture like?

Dhamar has historically been an important center of Zaydi Islamic scholarship, and the governorate's many historic mosques and madrasas reflect this intellectual heritage. The traditional architecture of the region — multi-story stone houses with decorative friezes and geometric patterns — is distinctive even by Yemeni standards. Poetic traditions, including both classical Arabic and local Nabati verse, remain vibrant, with regular gatherings featuring recitations accompanied by oud and frame drum. Islamic holidays, particularly Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, are celebrated with community-wide feasts, prayers, and visiting among families. Traditional crafts include stone masonry, weaving, and the production of jambiya daggers. Visitors should dress conservatively and be mindful of local customs, especially regarding photography.
