Yen Chau

Yen Chau is a river-valley district in southeastern Son La province, nestled along the Da River and the border with Hoa Binh province. Unlike the highland plateaus of western Son La, Yen Chau is characterised by low-elevation river terraces, tropical fruit orchards, and a warmer climate. It is one of the province's main agricultural areas, famous for its longan fruit.

The climate is warmer and more humid than the rest of Son La, with temperatures ranging from 18°C in winter to 36°C in summer. The best time to visit is during the longan harvest (July–August) or the dry season (November–March). The district centre is a town along Highway 6.

By Plane

Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi, about 230 km east, is the nearest airport. From Hanoi, take a bus towards Son La that passes through Yen Chau on Highway 6.

By Car / Road

Yen Chau is 70 km east of Son La city (1.5 hr) and 230 km from Hanoi (4.5–5 hr) on National Highway 6. The road is sealed and well-maintained. Buses between Hanoi and Son La stop in Yen Chau. Local buses from Son La cost 40,000–60,000 VND.

The town is walkable. For visiting outlying orchards and river villages, xe om is available (10,000–30,000 VND). A motorbike from Son La city gives you more freedom to explore the fertile valley.

• Longan Orchards — Yen Chau is the longan capital of northern Vietnam; vast orchards line the valley, especially along the road from the town towards the Da River.

• Da River Viewpoint — a scenic spot overlooking the river valley and the Hoa Binh Hydropower Reservoir.

• Yen Chau Market — a busy morning market with fresh tropical fruit, vegetables, and local produce.

• Phieng Canh Village — a Thai stilt-house village known for traditional wine-making and fruit cultivation.

• Van Yen Hot Springs — natural hot springs about 15 km from the town, with basic bathing facilities.

• Longan fruit picking in July–August at local orchards.

• Boat trip on the Da River or the Hoa Binh Reservoir (arrange through local boat owners).

• Cycle through the orchards and rice fields on quiet country roads.

• Visit a Thai stilt-house village for a homestay and fruit-tasting.

Vietnamese cuisine with a local twist: longan sweet soup (che long nhan), grilled fish from the Da River, and sticky rice steamed in banana leaves. The fertile valley also produces excellent vegetables and herbs. Eateries in town serve pho, com, and hotpot (30,000–60,000 VND).

Longan wine (ruou long nhan) is the local speciality — sweet and fragrant. Vietnamese coffee and fresh fruit juices are widely available. Tap water is not safe; drink bottled water.

• Budget: Nha Nghi Yen Chau — basic but tidy, 120,000–180,000 VND.
• Mid-range: Homestay in Phieng Canh or a Thai village — 150,000–250,000 VND with meals.
• Upscale: None in the district; the nearest upscale options are in Moc Chau or Son La city.

Longan fruit (fresh and dried) is the must-buy souvenir. Longan honey and longan wine are also produced locally. Tropical fruits such as pomelo, banana, and jackfruit are abundant and cheap at the market.
