Mai Son
Sơn La, Viet Nam
Why visit Mai Son?
Mai Son is a rural district in central Son La province, set among forested hills and river valleys. The district is predominantly agricultural, with farming communities of the Thai and Kinh ethnic groups living in stilt houses along the Nam Pam River. Unlike the tourist-oriented districts of Moc Chau and Mai Chau, Mai Son retains a quiet, everyday rural character.
The lowland valley location gives Mai Son a warmer climate than the rest of Son La, with summer highs reaching 34°C. The dry season (November–April) is the best time to visit. The district town is a simple administrative centre, with points of interest lying in the surrounding communes.
