Trieu Phong

Quảng Trị, Viet Nam

Why visit Trieu Phong?

Triệu Phong is a rural district in south-eastern Quảng Trị province, lying between the Thạch Hãn River and the South China Sea. The district capital lies at Ái Tử, a historic town on the south bank of the Thạch Hãn River about 10 km south-east of Dong Ha.

Triệu Phong has a long history dating back to the Nguyễn dynasty, when Ái Tử served as a military garrison. During the Vietnam War, the district was heavily contested because of its strategic location near the coast and the Cửa Việt port. The area was part of the ARVN's defensive line during the 1972 Easter Offensive and saw fierce fighting. Today the district is primarily agricultural, with rice farming and aquaculture dominating the local economy. The Cửa Việt port is an important fishing harbour.

The climate is tropical monsoon, with a dry season from February to August and a rainy, typhoon-prone season from September to January.
