Dong Ha

Quảng Trị, Viet Nam

Why visit Dong Ha?

Dong Ha (Đông Hà) is the capital city of Quảng Trị province in central Vietnam. Located on the banks of the Hiếu River, it serves as the primary gateway for travellers exploring the historic DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) — the area surrounding the former border between North and South Vietnam. As the closest major city to the DMZ, Dong Ha has a practical, travel-oriented character, with most visitors passing through on their way to the war relics, tunnels, and battle sites that dot the region.

The city was heavily damaged during the Vietnam War and was rebuilt from the ground up in the postwar period. As a result, it lacks the ancient pagodas and French colonial architecture found in nearby Huế or Hội An, but makes up for it with a genuine, off-the-beaten-path energy. The city's layout is straightforward, centred on Le Duan Street and the area around the market and train station.

Dong Ha has a tropical monsoon climate with a dry season from February to August and a rainy season from September to January. The hottest months are June through August, with temperatures often exceeding 35°C. The cooler, drier months from February to April are the most comfortable for sightseeing.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Phu Bai International Airport (HUI) near Huế, about 50 km south of Dong Ha. Taxis from the airport to Dong Ha cost around 600,000–800,000 dong and take about one hour. Da Nang International Airport (DAD), 180 km south, offers more flight options with connections to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and international destinations; a private taxi costs around 1,200,000 dong.

By Train

Dong Ha Railway Station is served by local (slow) trains on the north–south Reunification Express line, but the express services (Trains S1–S4) do not stop here. Local trains connect Dong Ha to Huế (2 hours), Đồng Hới (2.5 hours), and Da Nang (4 hours). Tickets are cheap — around 50,000–100,000 dong for a hard seat.

By Car / Road

Dong Ha is 50 km north of Huế (1 hour by car) and 180 km north of Da Nang (3 hours) on National Highway 1A. Minibuses and buses run frequently between Huế and Dong Ha (50,000 dong) and between Da Nang and Dong Ha (100,000 dong), departing regularly through the day. Vans to the Lao Bao border crossing cost 35,000–50,000 dong. Many travel agents in Huế also offer cheap bus transport as part of DMZ tour packages.

Walking is impractical for covering the city, as the roads are long, dusty, and hot. There are no city buses. Motorbike taxis (xe ôm) are the most practical option; negotiate the fare before setting off. Alternatively, most tours and hotels arrange transport to DMZ sites. Renting a motorbike is possible from a few places along Le Duan, though options are limited.

What are the things to do?

  • DMZ battle sites — Dong Ha is the starting point for day trips to the Vinh Moc Tunnels, Khe Sanh Combat Base, the Hiền Lương Bridge, and other DMZ landmarks.

  • DMZ day tour — The most popular activity from Dong Ha. Full-day tours visit the Vinh Moc Tunnels, Khe Sanh Combat Base, the Rockpile, and the Truong Son National Cemetery. Most hotels and Tam's Cafe can arrange tours.

  • Motorbike loop — Ride north along the coast or west toward the Lao border on Highway 9 for scenic mountain views.
