Gia Vien
Ninh Bình, Viet Nam
Why visit Gia Vien?
Gia Viễn is a rural district in northwestern Ninh Bình Province, bordering Hoa Bình Province along the Bôi River. The district is predominantly agricultural, with vast rice paddies, limestone outcrops, and a network of rivers and canals shaping its landscape. Gia Viễn is the gateway to Vân Long Nature Reserve, a Ramsar-listed wetland that sits partly within its boundaries.
Life here moves at a slower rhythm than in the tourist centres of Tam Cốc and Ninh Binh city. The district is known for its traditional villages, riverine scenery, and the critically endangered Delacour's langur that inhabits the karst cliffs bordering Vân Long. The best time to visit is November to February (dry, cool); the rainy season from May to October makes the countryside lush but roads can be challenging.

By Plane
Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi is the nearest major airport, about 120 km away (2.5 hours by road).
By Train
Ninh Binh railway station is the closest, about 25 km southeast. From there, local buses and taxis continue to Gia Viễn.
By Car / Road
Gia Viễn town is about 25 km northwest of Ninh Binh city along provincial roads. Regular buses run from Ninh Binh's bus station to Gia Viễn. By motorbike, the ride takes about 40 minutes through scenic countryside.
The district is best explored by motorbike or bicycle, as public transport within Gia Viễn is limited. The flat terrain and quiet rural roads make cycling a pleasant option. Boat trips on the Vân Long wetland are the main form of transport within the reserve.
What are the things to do?
Vân Long Wetland Nature Reserve — the largest inland wetland in northern Vietnam, with flooded limestone karst, caves, and a large population of Delacour's langur. Boat trips take visitors through the flooded valleys.
Địch Lộng Pagoda — a historic pagoda complex set against a limestone mountain, with a long cave containing Buddhist altars and stalactites.
Rural countryside — the rice paddies and canal network of Gia Viễn offer a glimpse of traditional Red River Delta farming life.
Boat trip on Vân Long — a rowing boat tour through the flooded karst landscape, passing caves and watching for langurs on the cliffs (about 1.5 hours). Boats can be hired at the Vân Long pier.
Cycling through rice paddies — the flat rural roads are ideal for cycling past fields, riverside villages, and limestone outcrops.
Birdwatching — the wetland and surrounding farmland attract a variety of waterbirds, egrets, and kingfishers.
