Hoa Lu

Ninh Bình, Viet Nam

Why visit Hoa Lu?

Hoa Lư (Vietnamese: Hoa Lư) is the capital city of Ninh Bình Province, formed in 2025 through the merger of Ninh Bình city and the former Hoa Lư district. The name refers both to the modern city and the ancient citadel that served as Vietnam's capital from 968 to 1009 under the Đinh and Early Lê dynasties. The ancient capital was built within a natural fortress of limestone karst — narrow caves and waterways provided a highly defensible position that was never directly attacked.

The city encompasses the full sweep of Ninh Bình's attractions: from the UNESCO-listed Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex and the Tam Cốc boat caves to the historic Hoa Lư temples and the vast Bái Đính Buddhist complex. The best time to visit is November to February, when the weather is cool and dry. Summer (May–September) is hot and humid but the lotus fields are in bloom.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi is the nearest major airport, about 110 km north (2 hours by car). Taxis cost around USD70.

By Train

Ninh Binh railway station serves the city, with frequent north–south trains on the Reunification Express line. Hanoi to Ninh Binh takes about 2 hours by train.

By Car / Road

Regular buses from Hanoi's Giap Bat bus terminal cost 70,000–100,000 dong (1.5–2.5 hours). Luxury limousine minibuses offer door-to-door service for about 400,000 dong per person.

The city centre is walkable, but most attractions are scattered across the wider Hoa Lư municipality. A motorbike is the best way to explore (rental from 100,000 dong/day). Bicycles are popular on the flat roads around Tam Cốc and Tràng An, and many guesthouses provide them free. Taxis and ride-hailing (Grab) are available.

What are the things to do?

Hoa Lư Ancient Capital — the temples of Đinh Tiên Hoàng and Lê Đại Hành, built from the 17th century onward, stand on the site of the 10th-century citadel. The complex includes the Nhat Tru Pagoda and Đinh Tiên Hoàng's tomb on the hilltop. 20,000 dong.

Bái Đính Temple — the largest Buddhist complex in Vietnam, with a 100-metre pagoda tower (elevator-equipped), vast halls, and thousands of Buddha statues. Free entrance; shuttle e-mobiles cost 100,000–250,000 dong.

Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex — a UNESCO World Heritage Site offering boat tours through cave systems, flooded valleys, and ancient temples.

Hoa Sơn Cave Temple (Chùa và động Hoa Sơn) — a cave pagoda with Buddhist shrines set into the limestone rock.

Khe Coc Island (Đảo Khê Cốc) — the former filming location of the village from Kong: Skull Island, repurposed in 2024 as an outdoor cultural museum. 20,000 dong.

Boat tours in Tràng An — the most popular activity, with rowing boats taking visitors through a series of caves and past small temples. Tours last 2–3 hours.

Cycling the Tràng An–Hang Mua road — a scenic route connecting Tam Cốc, Tràng An, and Mua Cave, passing lotus fields and karst peaks.

Visit Bái Đính at night — the complex is illuminated after dark, creating a magnificent sight.
