Why visit An Lao?

An Lao (An Lão) is a rural district of Hai Phong, located about 20 km southwest of the city centre. Covering approximately 122 km², the district has a population of around 130,000. An Lao is primarily an agricultural area, known for its rice paddies, vegetable farms, and the distinctive limestone formation of Elephant Mountain (Núi Voi).

The district is named after the An Lao River, which flows through the area and provides water for irrigation. An Lao has a relaxed, rural character with traditional villages, local temples, and scenic countryside. It is best known among travellers as the location of Elephant Mountain, a popular day-trip destination from Hai Phong for hiking and sightseeing.

An Lao experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot, rainy summers (May to October) and cool, relatively dry winters (November to April). The best time to visit is during the dry season when hiking conditions are optimal.
