Why visit Binh Luc?
Bình Lục is a rural district in eastern Hà Nam province, covering 155 km² with a population of approximately 158,000. The district capital is the town of Bình Mỹ. The name Bình Lục means "flat land" in Vietnamese, though it may also derive from ancient Annamese words meaning "buffalo," reflecting the area's historical character as swampy buffalo-grazing territory.
Centuries ago, much of this region was below sea level — a swampy floodplain with crocodiles. Bình Lục emerged as an oasis in the 15th century, and settlers gradually reclaimed the land for agriculture. In the 19th and 20th centuries it became a cultural centre, producing many families with examination degrees in the imperial system. The district is archaeologically significant: the Ngọc Lũ bronze drum, one of the finest examples of Đông Sơn culture (c. 500 BC), was excavated here in the 1960s along with five other drums.
The climate is humid subtropical. The best months to visit are October to April (dry, cooler). Summer brings heavy monsoon rains and occasional flooding in low-lying areas.
