Thanh Khe

Đà Nẵng, Viet Nam

Why visit Thanh Khe?

Thanh Khe is an urban district of Da Nang lying immediately west of Hai Chau, forming the inner-city gateway for travellers arriving by road or rail. Covering roughly 9 km², it is one of the densest districts, with a population exceeding 200,000. The district's character is primarily residential and commercial, with wide boulevards like Nguyễn Tất Thành and Hùng Vương lined with shops, restaurants, and local businesses.

Da Nang International Airport occupies a large swath of the district's southern edge, making Thanh Khe the first impression many visitors get of the city. The district shares Da Nang's tropical monsoon climate, with the hottest months (May–August) averaging 33°C and the rainy season (September–January) bringing the bulk of annual precipitation. The district was formerly District II (Quận Nhì) during the Republic of Vietnam era.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Da Nang International Airport (DAD) is partially within Thanh Khe's boundaries; the terminal is a 5–10 minute taxi ride from most of the district at a cost of 40,000–80,000 VND. Airport buses (line 1) stop along Hùng Vương and Nguyễn Hữu Thọ.

By Train

Da Nang Railway Station is on Hải Phòng Street, right on the Hai Chau–Thanh Khe border. From the station it is a 5-minute walk into central Thanh Khe. Trains connect daily to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City via the Reunification Express.

By Car / Road

Thanh Khe is the main entry point from the north (Hue) via National Highway 1A, which runs through the district as Nguyễn Tất Thành Street. The central bus station is a short walk from the district's eastern edge. From Hue: 2 hr (100 km). From Hoi An: 45 min (30 km).

Thanh Khe's grid of wide boulevards makes it relatively easy to navigate by motorbike or taxi. Grab motorbikes cost 10,000–25,000 VND for short hops. Local buses serve Nguyễn Tất Thành and Hùng Vương regularly. The district is less pedestrian-friendly than central Hai Chau but has several covered markets worth exploring on foot.
