Why visit?

Cần Thơ is the largest city in Vietnam's Mekong Delta and serves as the region's economic, cultural, and transportation hub. Situated on the southern bank of the Hậu River (a distributary of the Mekong), the municipality encompasses a network of canals, rivers, and fertile agricultural land that has shaped its identity as the "Western Capital" (Tây Đô) of southern Vietnam. Its vibrant floating markets, lush orchards, and deep-rooted riverine culture make it one of the most distinctive urban destinations in Southeast Asia.

Unlike the frenetic pace of Ho Chi Minh City just 170 km to the southeast, Cần Thơ moves at a gentler rhythm. Life here revolves around the water — from morning market trading on sampans to evening strolls along the Ninh Kiều waterfront promenade. The city blends modern Vietnamese urban development with centuries-old traditions of river commerce, making it an essential stop for any traveller seeking to understand the soul of the Mekong Delta.

Cần Thơ municipality is divided into several urban and rural districts, each offering a different facet of delta life — from the bustling centre with its French-colonial architecture to the tranquil countryside where rice paddies and fruit orchards stretch to the horizon.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Cần Thơ is during the dry season from December to April, when skies are clear, humidity is lower, and waterways are at navigable levels. December and January are particularly pleasant with daytime temperatures around 27–30°C. The floating markets are at their most lively during these months as agricultural produce is abundant.

The rainy season (May–November) brings heavy afternoon downpours and occasional flooding, but the landscape is at its most verdant. The flood season (September–November) is locally called "floating season" (mùa nước nổi) and brings unique experiences — fields become temporary lakes, and specialty dishes made from flood-season ingredients appear on local menus.

Key festivals include the Tết Nguyên Đán (Lunar New Year, January/February), when the city is decorated and markets overflow with flowers and seasonal cakes. The Chol Chnam Thmay festival of the ethnic Khmer community (April) is celebrated at nearby temples with traditional music and dance. The Bún nước lèo food festival showcases the region's signature noodle soup.

How do you get around?

Cần Thơ is compact enough to explore central areas on foot or by bicycle, but reaching outlying districts requires motorised transport. The city has no metro or tram system; most visitors rely on a combination of taxis, ride-hailing apps (Grab is widely available), and xe ôm (motorbike taxis).

From the city centre, the Cái Răng floating market is about 6 km by road or a scenic 30-minute boat ride along the Cần Thơ River. Bến Ninh Kiều (Ninh Kiều Wharf) is the main departure point for river tours. Motorbike rental is available for around 100,000–150,000 VND/day and is the most flexible way to explore rural districts like Phong Điền and Ô Môn.

Long-distance buses connect Cần Thơ to Ho Chi Minh City (3–4 hours), Vĩnh Long (45 minutes), and Châu Đốc (3 hours) from the central bus station. Cần Thơ International Airport offers domestic flights to Hanoi and Phú Quốc. The Cần Thơ Bridge, one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in Southeast Asia, connects the city to the eastern provinces.

  • Cái Răng — home to the famous Cái Răng floating market, the largest and most authentic floating market in the Mekong Delta, where boats laden with fruit and vegetables trade at dawn.
  • Ô Môn — a quieter district offering traditional craft villages, authentic delta cuisine, and a glimpse into unhurried rural life along the canals.
  • Thốt Nốt — the northern gateway to Cần Thơ municipality, known for its Khmer pagodas, stork gardens, and as a transit point toward An Giang province.
  • Phong Điền — a rural district famous for its weekend floating market, organic fruit orchards, and homestay experiences that immerse visitors in delta agricultural life.
  • Cờ Đỏ — an agricultural heartland district where vast rice paddies, traditional farming methods, and seasonal waterways define the landscape.
  • Thới Lai — a predominantly rural area offering bird-watching at Tràm Chim wetlands and cycling routes through quiet canal-side villages.
  • Vĩnh Thạnh — the westernmost district, known for its fish farms, Khmer cultural heritage, and access to the U Minh Hạ cajuput forests.

What should you eat?

Cần Thơ's cuisine is inseparable from the Mekong Delta's extraordinary agricultural bounty. The signature dish is bún nước lèo, a rich fish-based noodle soup flavoured with fermented fish (mắm cá), lemongrass, and turmeric — often considered the definitive dish of the western delta. Lẩu mắm (fermented fish hotpot) is another essential, loaded with river fish, shrimp, pork, and an abundance of local vegetables and herbs.

The Cái Răng floating market is itself a dining experience — vendors serve hủ tiếu (pork noodle soup), bánh mì, and fresh fruit smoothies directly from their boats. Look for the iconic bamboo pole (cây bẹo) displaying what each boat sells. On land, the night market along Ninh Kiều Wharf offers grilled seafood, bánh xèo (savoury crepes), and cá lóc nướng trui (field-roasted snakehead fish).

Regional fruits are a highlight: rambutan, mangosteen, longan, and the pungent durian are available year-round, with peak abundance from May to August. For a memorable dining experience, seek out riverside restaurants in Bình Thủy district that serve cá tai tượng (elephant-ear fish) — a whole fried fish wrapped in rice paper with herbs and sweet-sour dipping sauce.

What is the culture like?

Cần Thơ's culture is a rich tapestry of ethnic Vietnamese (Kinh), Khmer, and Chinese heritage. The city is home to significant Khmer and Hoa (Chinese-Vietnamese) communities whose temples, pagodas, and festivals add layers of cultural diversity. The Chol Chnam Thmay (Khmer New Year, mid-April) is celebrated with traditional Apsara dance, music, and ceremonies at pagodas throughout the city.

The annual Cần Thơ Fruit Festival (held in May–June, typically in Bình Thủy district) showcases the region's tropical fruit harvest with exhibitions, tastings, and cultural performances. Ok Om Bok (Moon Worship Festival, October/November) is a major Khmer celebration featuring boat races on the river and the release of floating lanterns.

Traditional arts include đờn ca tài tử (southern Vietnamese folk music, UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage), which is performed at cultural centres and during community gatherings. The city's Chinese assembly halls (hội quán) in the old quarter host festivals during the Mid-Autumn Festival and Lunar New Year with lion dances and incense ceremonies.

What are the standout experiences?

Dawn at Cái Răng Floating Market — Wake before sunrise and take a boat from Ninh Kiều Wharf to witness one of Vietnam's most iconic scenes: hundreds of wooden sampans bartering tropical produce, with cooking smoke rising from floating kitchens. Arrive by 5:30 AM for the best experience.

Cycling the Canals of Phong Điền — Rent a bicycle and follow the narrow paths alongside shaded canals through Phong Điền rural district, stopping at family-run orchards, bee farms, and the weekend floating market. Several homestays offer guided cycling tours with local meals included.

Night Walk Along Ninh Kiều Wharf — The riverside promenade transforms after dark into a lively gathering spot with street food vendors, illuminated dragon-boat restaurants, and views of the illuminated Cần Thơ Bridge in the distance. The atmosphere is both festive and relaxed — a perfect delta evening.

Exploring the Ancient House of Bình Thủy — Visit the beautifully preserved 19th-century Dương family house in Bình Thủy district, a blend of French colonial and Vietnamese architecture that featured in the film The Lover. The surrounding gardens bloom with orchids and ornamental plants.

Boat Journey Through the Mekong's Canals — Hire a small sampan and navigate the narrow, palm-fringed back canals (rạch) that web through the countryside. These intimate waterways reveal a world of floating fish farms, riverside villages, and coconut candy workshops that the main rivers conceal.
