Why visit Vinh Thanh?

Vinh Thanh (Vietnamese: Vinh Thanh) is a mountainous district in western Binh Dinh province, about 60 km northwest of Quy Nhon. It is one of the most remote and least-populated districts in the province, with a landscape of steep forested mountains, narrow valleys, and meandering rivers. The district is home to significant populations of the Ba Na (Bahnar) and H're ethnic groups, who comprise about 40% of the population.

The district centre is the town of Vinh Thanh, situated along the Dak Mi River. The primary economic activities are forestry, agriculture (coffee, rubber, cashew nuts), and the operations of the Dinh Binh Hydroelectric Plant, one of the largest in the region. The climate is significantly cooler than the coastal areas, with temperatures ranging from 17-30 deg C depending on elevation. The rainy season (September-December) brings heavy precipitation and occasional landslides on mountain roads. Vinh Thanh is an emerging destination for ecotourism and cultural exploration.

Phu Cat Airport (UIH) is about 70 km east, roughly a 1.5-hour drive by taxi (500,000-600,000 dong).

By Train

The nearest major railway station is Dieu Tri, about 55 km southeast on the Reunification Express line. From Dieu Tri, buses and taxis connect to Vinh Thanh (about 1.5 hours).

By Car / Road

Vinh Thanh is accessible via Provincial Route 629, a winding mountain road that branches off Highway 1A near Hoai Nhon district. The drive from Quy Nhon takes about 2-2.5 hours (around 60 km). Buses run from Quy Nhon's central bus station to Vinh Thanh a few times daily (about 50,000 dong). During the rainy season, the mountain roads can be treacherous and a 4WD vehicle is recommended.

Vinh Thanh town is small and walkable. For reaching outlying villages, hydropower sites, and trekking trails, a motorbike or hired car with driver is necessary. Xe om (motorbike taxis) are limited in number. Hiring a local guide is strongly recommended for forest trekking.
