Bach Thong
Bắc Kạn, Viet Nam
Why visit Bach Thong?
Bach Thong (Vietnamese: Bạch Thông) is a rural district in central Bắc Kạn province, lying along National Highway QL3 approximately 20 km north of Bac Kan city. The district covers an area of 546 km² and has a population of about 31,500, predominantly from the Tày ethnic group, with significant Dao and Nùng minorities.
The district capital is the town of Phủ Thông. Bach Thong's economy is based on agriculture (wet rice, maize, and cassava), forestry, and small-scale trade along the highway corridor. The terrain is mountainous and heavily forested, with narrow river valleys where most settlement is concentrated. Bach Thong has a humid subtropical climate; the best time to travel is during the dry season from September to November or February to April.

By Plane
The nearest airport is Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi, about 180 km south. From the airport, take a taxi to Mỹ Đình bus station, then a bus to Bac Kan, and a local minibus north to Phủ Thông.
By Car / Road
Buses running between Hanoi and Cao Bằng along QL3 pass through Bach Thong. From Hanoi's Mỹ Đình station, catch a bus bound for Cao Bằng and ask to be dropped at Phủ Thông (4–5 hours, 200,000–300,000 dong). From Bac Kan city, it is about 20 minutes north by bus or taxi.
The main road (QL3) is the only paved artery. Local buses and xe ôm (motorbike taxis) connect Phủ Thông to outlying communes. Roads into the mountainous villages are unpaved and can be impassable after heavy rain.
What are the things to do?
Phủ Thông town — The district centre, a compact roadside settlement with a market and basic services. The surrounding scenery of limestone karst and terraced rice fields is the main draw.
Local Tày and Dao villages — Traditional stilt houses and terraced fields can be seen in communes such as Vũ Muộn and Cao Sơn.
Rice terraces — During the wet season (May–October), the valley slopes around Bach Thong are carpeted in green rice paddies.
Motorcycle touring — Bach Thong lies on the scenic QL3 route between Hanoi and Cao Bằng, popular with motorbike travellers exploring Vietnam's northeast.
Village walks — Short hikes from Phủ Thông into the surrounding hills offer views of the valley and encounters with local farmers.
Photography — The contrast between limestone karst, rice terraces, and traditional architecture makes for rewarding landscape photography.
