Henri Pittier National Park

Henri Pittier National Park is Venezuela's oldest national park, created in 1937 as Rancho Grande and later renamed in honour of the Swiss naturalist who studied its biodiversity. Located in Aragua state along the Caribbean coast, the park spans approximately 107,800 hectares from the high coastal mountains down to the sea. It protects an extraordinary range of ecosystems: cloud forests, dry tropical forests, mangroves, and coastal beaches. It is one of the most biodiverse areas in the world, home to over 500 bird species (more than Europe and North America combined) and countless species of butterflies, mammals, and plants.

The climate varies dramatically with altitude. The high mountains are cool and misty (12–20 °C), while the coastal strip is hot (27–33 °C). The dry season (December–April) is the best time for hiking on the mountain trails; the wet season (May–November) brings rain that can make trails slippery and cause landslides on the coastal road.

The park's human presence is concentrated in a few coastal villages (Choroní, Ocumare de la Costa) and the Rancho Grande biological station. The park is accessed by road from Maracay or via the coastal highway.

By Plane

Maracay Airport (MYC) has limited domestic flights. Most international visitors fly to Simón Bolívar International Airport (CCS) in Caracas (120 km east) and travel by road.

By Car / Road

From Maracay (15 km north), the road enters the park via Rancho Grande and descends to the coast at Choroní. This mountain road is winding and requires careful driving (1 hour). From the coast, the park is accessible via the highway from Valencia to Ocumare de la Costa.

Bus: Buses from Maracay to Choroní and Ocumare de la Costa pass through the park.

A 4x4 vehicle is recommended for park roads, especially in the wet season. Hiking trails connect the main points of interest. Local guides are available in Choroní and at the Rancho Grande station. Boat transport is needed for accessing the Parque Nacional Henri Pittier along the coast.

• Rancho Grande Biological Station — A historic building originally intended as a hotel, now a research station and museum. The surrounding area is excellent for birdwatching.

• Choroní — A charming coastal village with Afro-Venezuelan heritage, colonial church, and palm-fringed beaches.

• Playa Choroní — A beautiful beach near the village, with restaurants and accommodation.

• Playa Grande — A wilder, more secluded beach accessible by boat or hiking.

• Ocumare de la Costa — A coastal town with a historic fortress and access to park trails.

• Cloud forest trails — The mountain section of the park offers hiking through misty forests with giant ferns and bromeliads.

• Birdwatching — Henri Pittier is one of the world's premier birding destinations. Over 500 species including toucans, parrots, hummingbirds, and the elusive cock-of-the-rock.

• Hiking — Numerous trails ranging from short walks to full-day hikes through cloud forest and coastal vegetation.

• Beach days — The coastal section offers beautiful beaches with coconut palms and turquoise water.

• Butterfly watching — The park is famous for its butterfly diversity, with hundreds of species.

• Nightlife in Choroní — The coastal village comes alive at night with music, dancing, and seafood.

Choroní and the coastal villages specialise in fresh seafood. Pescado frito (fried fish) with tostones and salad is the standard. Coconuts are abundant and used in drinks and desserts. Artisan chocolate and coffee from the region are excellent.

Fresh coconut water, fruit juices, beer, and rum. Tap water is unsafe anywhere in the park.

Small shops in Choroní sell basic supplies and souvenirs. Local crafts include woven items and coconut-based products. For serious shopping, Maracay is the nearest city.
