La Colonia Tovar

Aragua, Venezuela

Why visit La Colonia Tovar?

La Colonia Tovar is a unique mountain town in Aragua state, Venezuela, known for its remarkable German heritage. Founded in 1843 by German immigrants from the Black Forest region of Baden-Württemberg, it has preserved its central European architecture, cuisine, and cultural traditions despite being surrounded by tropical Venezuelan landscape. The town sits at an altitude of approximately 1,800 m in the Cordillera de la Costa mountains, giving it a cool, misty climate distinctly different from the tropical lowlands.

The climate is temperate year-round, with daytime temperatures of 15–22 °C and nights dropping to 8–12 °C. It can be rainy and cool at any time. The dry season (December–April) offers clearer skies, while the wet season (May–November) brings frequent mist and rain — part of the town's atmospheric charm. Weekends and holidays are busy with day-trippers from Caracas.

The town's layout is compact, clustered around the main square (Plaza Bolívar), with cobblestone streets and Alpine-style buildings with steep roofs, flower boxes, and wooden balconies. The surrounding mountains are cloaked in cloud forest and pine plantations.
