Las Piedras

Canelones, Uruguay

Why visit Las Piedras?

Las Piedras is a mid-sized city of roughly 70,000 people in southern Uruguay's Canelones Department, situated about 20 km north of Montevideo along Route 5. It is best known as the site of the Battle of Las Piedras (1811), a decisive engagement in Uruguay's independence struggle led by José Gervasio Artigas — a founding moment commemorated by a prominent monument and museum on the outskirts of town. Today the city functions primarily as a residential and commercial satellite of greater Montevideo, with a busy agricultural hinterland that produces wine, dairy and vegetables.

The city centre clusters around Plaza Artigas and the pedestrianised calle principal, where municipal buildings, shops and cafés line a compact grid. Las Piedras has a small-town feel despite its size: weekends revolve around the feria, family asados and football. For travellers, it makes a worthwhile half-day trip from Montevideo — particularly for history enthusiasts drawn to the Artigas heritage — and a convenient base for exploring Canelones' wine country.

Climate is temperate, with warm summers (December–March, highs around 28–32 °C) and cool winters (June–August, 8–14 °C). Rainfall is spread fairly evenly year-round; January and February are the wettest months.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Carrasco International Airport (MVD), approximately 25 km east of Las Piedras. From the airport, a taxi or remise (private hire car) to Las Piedras costs roughly UYU 1,200–1,500 and takes 25–35 minutes depending on traffic. There is no direct airport bus to Las Piedras; a transfer via Montevideo's Tres Cruces bus terminal is required.

By Train

Commuter rail services on the Ferrocarril Central line connect Montevideo's Lorenzo Carnelli station with Las Piedras. Trains run several times daily on weekdays (the schedule is limited on weekends). The journey takes approximately 30–40 minutes and costs around UYU 50–80. The Las Piedras station is centrally located near Plaza Artigas.

By Car / Road

From Montevideo, take Route 5 north from the city limits; the drive is approximately 20 km and takes 25–35 minutes depending on traffic at the Montevideo–Canelones border. Roads are paved and in good condition. From Canelones city (the department capital), Las Piedras is about 15 km south-east via Route 5. Frequent bus services (Copsa, Cutcsa interdepartmental lines) connect Las Piedras with Montevideo's Tres Cruces terminal, running every 10–15 minutes during peak hours; fare is around UYU 60–80.

Las Piedras' centre is compact and walkable — most sights, shops and restaurants are within a 15-minute walk of Plaza Artigas. Local buses (líneas urbanas) connect the centre with surrounding neighbourhoods and the outlying monument/museum area. Fares are around UYU 40–50. Taxis are affordable (flag fall ~UYU 40, short trips UYU 80–120) and can be hailed on the street or ordered by phone. Ride-hailing apps (Uber, Cabify) also operate. Traffic is light outside weekday rush hours; parking in the centre is generally available on the street.

What are the things to do?

Plaza Artigas and the Obelisk — the city's central square, dominated by a monument to José Artigas, is the social heart of Las Piedras. Bordered by municipal buildings and shaded by mature trees, it's a pleasant spot to sit and observe daily life.

Monumento de la Batalla de Las Piedras — located on the eastern outskirts of the city along the road to Montevideo, this hilltop monument commemorates the 1811 battle. The site includes a tall column, a museum with period weapons, uniforms and documents, and panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. The museum is typically open Tuesday–Sunday; admission is free or nominal (UYU 50–100).

Museo Histórico Municipal — a small municipal museum in the city centre with exhibits on local history, the battle and Artigas' campaigns. Hours vary; check locally.

Iglesia Matriz — the main parish church on the central plaza, a modest but handsome early-20th-century structure.

Walk the Ruta Histórica — a self-guided walking route connecting the city centre with the Battle of Las Piedras monument and museum, passing several historical markers. The full circuit is about 5 km.

Wine-tasting day-trip — Las Piedras sits within Canelones, Uruguay's premier wine region. Several bodegas (wineries) in the surrounding area — including those along the Ruta del Vino — offer tastings and tours of Tannat, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc vineyards. Arrange visits in advance; many are open Thursday–Sunday.

Feria y market — the weekend feria (street market) near the centre sells local produce, artisan goods and household items. A good place to sample regional cheeses, dulce de leche and seasonal fruit.

Football — catch a local match if Club Atlético Las Piedras or another neighbourhood club is playing at home; football is a serious community affair.

Where to eat?

Las Piedras is an asado (barbecue) town: parrillas (grill restaurants) serve beef, chorizo, morcilla and costillas over wood charcoal, usually accompanied by ensalada rusa and papas fritas. A full asado meal costs UYU 400–700 per person. Several casual restaurants near Plaza Artigas offer menú del día (set lunch) for UYU 200–350, typically including a main course, side and drink.

Pizzas and milanesas (breaded cutlets) are ubiquitous on local menus. Vegetarian options are limited but improving; ask for ensalada criolla (tomato-onion salad) or pasta dishes. For a sweet finish, look for chivito (a loaded steak sandwich, though originally from Punta del Este) and flan con dulce de leche at any local confitería.

Restaurant recommendation: Parrilla near Plaza Artigas (several options along the pedestrian street — ask locally for the current favourite, as turnover is high).

Where to drink?

Mate (herbal tea shared from a gourd) is the universal social drink, consumed at all hours in public spaces. For something stronger, Uruguayan wine — especially Tannat from nearby Canelones bodegas — is excellent and affordable. Pilsner beer (Pilsen, Patricia) is the standard local brew, available at every bar and restaurant. Cafés around the plaza serve espresso and cortado (UYU 80–130).

Tap water is safe to drink throughout Las Piedras. Nightlife is low-key; a handful of bars and boliche (small clubs) stay open until midnight or later on weekends.

  • Budget: Hospedajes (guesthouses) in the centre offer basic rooms from UYU 800–1,200 per night. Don't expect online booking — walk in or call.
  • Mid-range: Hotel Las Piedras or similar small hotels near the centre, UYU 2,000–3,500 per night with breakfast.

What should you buy?

Las Piedras' main commercial street has a handful of shops selling clothing, electronics and household goods. For local specialities, seek out dulce de leche, artisan cheese and regional wines from Canelones producers at the feria or small delicatessens.
