Why visit Solymar?

Solymar is one of the larger residential beach neighbourhoods of Ciudad de la Costa, in southwestern Canelones Department, centred on roughly km 24 of Avenida Luis Giannattasio. It sits between Lagomar to the west and the Montes and Parque de Solymar barrios to the east, bounded by the Ruta Interbalnearia to the north and the Río de la Plata to the south. Carrasco International Airport lies about 6 km to the west. With more than 22,000 residents, it is among the most populous neighbourhoods of the city.

The name — "Sol y Mar," sun and sea — captures its origins as a holiday resort. It was founded in 1948 by the company Solymar S.A., headed by Eduardo Márquez Castro, which bought 180 hectares and won approval for the first 100-hectare plan in January 1950; recreational facilities followed from 1952. The developer MAR S.A. later drove much of the area's growth, reputedly planting well over a million trees across the wider district, which is why the neighbourhood is so green. Solymar became part of the unified Ciudad de la Costa on 19 October 1994.

Today Solymar is a relaxed, tree-shaded suburb with a long sandy beach and the area's biggest shopping centre on its doorstep. Visit in summer (December–February) for warm weather and an active beachfront; the off-season is calm and many seasonal services close.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Carrasco International Airport (IATA: MVD) is about 6 km west — a short taxi or ride-hailing trip. As Uruguay's main airport, MVD links to Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Santiago, Panama City and Madrid, among other destinations.

By Car / Road

From Montevideo it is roughly 22 km (about 25–30 minutes) east via Avenida Giannattasio or the Ruta Interbalnearia, which runs along the neighbourhood's northern edge. COPSA suburban buses serve Giannattasio frequently from Montevideo; long-distance coastal lines also pass on the Interbalnearia. Taxis and ride-hailing apps make quick work of the airport connection.

Solymar's sandy residential streets are easy to walk or cycle, with the beach to the south and the commercial strip on Giannattasio running through the middle. COPSA buses run constantly along Giannattasio, linking Solymar to its neighbours, to Costa Urbana Shopping and to Montevideo. Uber and Cabify operate throughout. A car is handy for exploring the wider city, but a beach stay in Solymar works well on foot, by bike and by bus.

What are the things to do?

  • Solymar beach — A long, sandy Río de la Plata beach backed by dunes and pines, part of the city's Rambla Costanera; busy and sociable in summer.
  • Rambla Costanera — The coastal promenade runs the length of the neighbourhood, good for walking, running, cycling and sunsets over the river.
  • The pine-shaded streets — The legacy of the mid-century mass tree-planting gives Solymar an unusually green, parklike feel for a coastal suburb.
  • Costa Urbana Shopping (nearby) — On Giannattasio at the western edge, a modern mall that doubles as the area's civic and social hub.

Beach life is the main event: swimming, sunbathing, beach sports and long walks or rides along the rambla. In summer the beachfront paradores bring casual food, drinks and music to the sand. Shore fishing is popular along the coast. Because the airport and Montevideo are both close, Solymar is a comfortable base for day trips into the capital or eastward to the Costa de Oro resorts and Punta del Este. The Costa Urbana mall adds cinema and indoor options for off-season or rainy days.

Where to eat?

Grill and seafood culture leads the way. La Diecisiete is a well-known Solymar parrilla for asado, and just east in Médanos de Solymar, Las Casuarinas is a long-standing local table. The food court at Costa Urbana Shopping covers quick, family-friendly meals year-round, and neighbouring barrios add more — Parrillada 29 de Julio in Lagomar and the seafood-focused Ladran Sancho in El Pinar are both a short drive away. Expect chivito, pizza, empanadas and fresh grilled fish across budgets.

Where to drink?

Mate is the daily social ritual, sipped along the rambla and at home. Uruguayan wines — above all Tannat from the surrounding Canelones vineyards — and local beer are widely available. In summer the beach paradores serve drinks at sunset; cafés along Giannattasio and inside Costa Urbana pour coffee and serve sweets year-round. Tap water is safe to drink.

  • Budget: Off-season apartment and cabaña rentals start around US$35–60 per night.
  • Mid-range: Apart-hotels and better-equipped rentals run roughly US$60–110 in season — book on the major platforms and confirm current rates.

What should you buy?

The standout is Costa Urbana Shopping (Av. Giannattasio km 21, on the Solymar/San José de Carrasco line) — opened in 2012, with more than 100 shops, a cinema, a large food court and a children's area, joined across the avenue by a pedestrian bridge. It is the main retail and civic centre for the whole of Ciudad de la Costa. Beyond the mall, everyday commerce lines Avenida Giannattasio. For crafts and souvenirs, look to the Costa de Oro resort towns to the east or to Montevideo.

Where to go next?

  • El Pinar (~4 km east) — the pine-and-dune eastern end of the city.
