Why visit Sandusky?
Sandusky is a city in Ohio's north coast along Lake Erie between Cleveland and Toledo, and the county seat of Erie County. It is perhaps best known for Cedar Point, home to some of the world's tallest and fastest roller coasters, making it one of the top amusement park destinations in the country. Beyond the thrills, Sandusky boasts one of Ohio's prettiest downtowns, with a clean, walkable waterfront business district and a pier popular for fishing. The city sits at 580 feet elevation and serves as the gateway to the Lake Erie Islands.
Sandusky's downtown features well-preserved 19th-century architecture, with many buildings converted into shops, restaurants, and galleries. The waterfront area is very safe for walking compared to most cities. The surrounding area along the lake offers plenty of historic sites, including the Marblehead Lighthouse, Johnson Island Civil War Cemetery, and numerous historic cemeteries with notable stone carvings.
The city has a continental climate with warm, humid summers ideal for beach-going and water activities, and cold winters with significant lake-effect snow. The tourist season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when visitors from across the Great Lakes and Midwest regions flock to Cedar Point and the surrounding attractions. Late winter is known for excellent fishing at the pier due to fish spawning in local rivers and streams.
