Why visit Akron?
Akron is a city of nearly 200,000 people in Northeast Ohio's Summit County, situated on the southern edge of the historic Connecticut Western Reserve. Once known as the Rubber Capital of the World, Akron was the original home of Goodyear Tire and before that a pottery works and the headquarters of Quaker Oats. Today it has reinvented itself as the City of Invention, home to the University of Akron, polymer science research, and a growing cultural scene that belies its industrial past.
The city occupies a strategic position on the shortest possible line between the Cuyahoga River, connecting to Lake Erie via the Great Lakes, and the Tuscarawas River, linking to the Ohio River and ultimately the Gulf of Mexico. The Portage Path, the historic portage route between the two watersheds, has connected peoples since time immemorial and is the primary reason Akron developed where it did. The city's diverse population and rich heritage, including significant German and Irish ancestry, are reflected in its neighborhoods, cuisine, and annual festivals.
Akron experiences a continental climate with warm, humid summers reaching the low 80s°F and cold winters with temperatures in the 30s°F and significant snowfall. Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons, with mild temperatures ideal for exploring the city's parks, museums, and cultural attractions. The city has excellent interstate highway access, with very little more than 10 minutes from an expressway.
