Why visit Truth or Consequences?
Truth or Consequences, locally called "T or C," is a small town in Sierra County, southwestern New Mexico, with a population of about 6,000. The town's unusual name dates to 1950, when the CBS game show "Truth or Consequences" offered to film an episode in any small town willing to change its name to match the show. Hot Springs, New Mexico, needing an economic boost, accepted the deal and has been known by its quirky name ever since.
The town's real draw is its natural hot mineral baths. Ten lodging options in the downtown district offer hot mineral baths as part of their accommodations, and several dedicated bathhouses provide public access to the geothermal waters. The baths are fed by underground springs that emerge at temperatures around 105–110°F (40–43°C) and are rich in minerals. The town sits along Interstate 25, about halfway between Albuquerque and Las Cruces, making it a convenient stop for travelers on the historic El Camino Real.
The climate is semi-arid with hot summers (highs in the 90s–100s°F) and mild winters (highs in the 50s–60s°F). The area receives about 10 inches of precipitation annually. Elephant Butte Reservoir, 7 miles north, provides water recreation and moderates the local climate slightly. The best times to visit are spring (March–May) and fall (September–November), when temperatures are comfortable for outdoor activities and hot soaks.
