Carlsbad
New Mexico, United States
Why visit Carlsbad?
Carlsbad is a city in southeastern New Mexico and the seat of Eddy County, with a population of about 32,000. Known as "The Pearl of the Permian Basin," the city sits on the Pecos River in the Chihuahuan Desert and serves as the gateway to Carlsbad Caverns National Park, located 25 miles southwest. The local economy is driven by oil and gas production, potash mining, and tourism, giving it a blend of working-energy-town and tourist-hub character.
The town was established in 1888 and originally named Eddy (after the town's founder). It was renamed Carlsbad in 1899, reportedly inspired by the famous spa town of Karlovy Vary (then called Carlsbad) in Bohemia, due to similarities in the local limestone geology. The discovery of Carlsbad Caverns brought growing tourism, and the area's oil boom in the early 20th century cemented its economic foundation.
The climate is semi-arid with extremely hot summers — temperatures regularly exceed 100°F (38°C) from June through August, making it one of the hottest cities in New Mexico. Winters are mild with highs in the 50s–60s°F. Precipitation is sparse, averaging about 14 inches annually, mostly in brief summer thunderstorms. Spring winds can be fierce. The best times to visit are spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) for comfortable outdoor temperatures.
