Las Cruces

New Mexico, United States

Why visit Las Cruces?

Las Cruces is New Mexico's second-largest city, with a population of over 111,000, located in the southern part of the state at the junction of Interstate Highways 10 and 25. The name means "the crosses" in Spanish, and the city serves as the southern terminus of I-25 and the commercial and cultural hub of the Mesilla Valley. It is home to New Mexico State University and sits in the shadow of the Organ Mountains, a dramatic granite range that defines the city's eastern skyline.

Founded in 1849, Las Cruces grew as a farming and ranching community before the railroad arrived in 1881. The nearby Mesilla Old Town, with its historic plaza and adobe buildings, was a major stop on the Camino Real and the Butterfield Overland Mail route. Billy the Kid was tried and convicted of murder in Mesilla in 1881. Today, the city's economy is driven by agriculture (particularly pecans and chile peppers), New Mexico State University, White Sands Missile Range, and the growing space technology sector.

The climate is semi-arid with abundant sunshine (over 350 days per year). Summers are hot (highs in the 90s–100s°F) and winters are mild (highs in the 50s–60s°F). The city receives about 9 inches of precipitation annually, mostly in summer monsoon thunderstorms. The Organ Mountains and Mesilla Valley provide stunning scenery in every direction.
