Why visit French Lick?
French Lick is a small town in south-central Indiana, best known for its historic resort hotels and its connection to basketball legend Larry Bird. The town gained fame in the 19th century when its natural mineral springs attracted visitors seeking the healing properties of the waters. The French Lick Springs Hotel and the nearby West Baden Springs Hotel are landmark properties that have been restored to their former grandeur, making the area a popular destination for history buffs, golfers, and resort visitors.
The town sits in the rolling hills of Orange County, surrounded by forested landscapes and near Patoka Lake, Indiana's second-largest reservoir. French Lick is also known for its casino resort, which opened in 2006, and for being the birthplace of Larry Bird, whose childhood home and museum are local attractions. The area has a quiet, small-town charm with a population of around 1,800.
French Lick has a humid continental climate with warm summers (highs around 83°F/28°C in July) and cold winters (highs around 37°F/3°C in January). The best times to visit are spring and fall, when the surrounding hills are at their most scenic. Summer is popular for resort activities and lake visits.
