Why visit Bloomington?

Bloomington is a city of 86,000 people in Southern Indiana, home to the flagship campus of Indiana University (IU) and the IU Hoosiers sports teams. As the largest city in the region, it serves as the de facto employment, service, and shopping center for several adjacent counties. The city is the county seat of Monroe County and is known for its vibrant arts scene, diverse dining, and progressive character in a largely conservative state.

Like most Indiana cities, Bloomington is arranged mostly on a rectangular grid. College Ave and Walnut St form the main north-south thoroughfare through the central city, dividing it into east and west sides. The east side is centered around the IU main campus, while the west side was historically industrial. Many former industrial plants have closed, and the north-side railway has been converted to the popular B-Line Trail walking and bicycling path.

Bloomington has a humid continental climate with warm summers (highs around 82°F/28°C in July) and cold winters (highs around 35°F/2°C in January). Fall is particularly beautiful as the surrounding hills display brilliant foliage. Spring brings blooming dogwoods and redbuds. The city is pleasant year-round, though winter visitors should be prepared for occasional snow and cold.
