Kumbag
Tekirdağ, Turkey
Why visit Kumbag?
Kumbağ is a small coastal town at the southern end of the beach strip straggling south from Tekirdağ city, on the northern shore of the Sea of Marmara. It has grown from a quiet fishing village into a popular weekend getaway for Istanbul residents seeking fresh seafood, sandy beaches, and the bracing Marmara breeze. The town sits at the foot of Mount Ganos, where the mountains meet the sea, creating a dramatic backdrop of wooded slopes descending to the waterfront.
The sandy beach stretches along the coast, backed by a promenade lined with seafood lokantas, tea gardens, and simple pensions. Kumbağ's appeal lies in its unpretentious atmosphere—there are no grand resorts or nightclubs, just good fish, warm hospitality, and the sound of waves. The town is particularly lively on summer weekends when Istanbulites arrive in cars and dolmuşes, but quieter on weekdays, offering a more contemplative coastal experience.
Beyond the beach, the road winds south through the hills towards Uçmakdere and eventually Şarköy, passing through vineyards and olive groves. Mount Ganos rising directly behind the town provides hiking trails of varying difficulty, including a challenging 20-kilometer trek, and paragliding launch sites with panoramic views of the Marmara coast.

By Plane
The nearest airport is Istanbul's new airport (IST), approximately 150 km east. Istanbul Seyahat buses run from IST to Tekirdağ (not directly to Kumbağ), from where a dolmuş or taxi completes the journey. Çorlu Airport (TEQ), about 80 km northeast, has infrequent flights from Ankara but limited public transport connections.
By Train
The nearest railway station is at Çorlu, approximately 60 km northeast of Kumbağ. Trains run twice daily from Istanbul to Çorlu. From Çorlu, take a dolmuş or taxi to Tekirdağ, then a dolmuş south to Kumbağ.
By Car / Road
From Istanbul, follow the O-3/E80 toll motorway west, then take D110/E84 through Marmara Ereğlisi. The drive takes about 90 minutes to two hours depending on traffic. From Tekirdağ, Kumbağ is approximately 8 km south along the coastal road, a 15-minute drive. Dolmuşes run frequently between Tekirdağ and Kumbağ throughout the day.
Kumbağ is small enough to explore entirely on foot. The beach, promenade, restaurants, and town center are all within walking distance. Dolmuşes connect Kumbağ to Tekirdağ (approximately every 10 minutes during the day, 3 TL fare) and continue south to Şarköy. Taxis are available but rarely needed within town. For exploring the Mount Ganos trails or visiting Uçmakdere, a rental car or hired taxi is recommended.

Kumbağ's culinary reputation rests on its fresh seafood, served simply at waterfront lokantas.
- Balık Lokantası — Several unmarked or modestly named fish restaurants along the promenade serve grilled sea bass, sea bream, calamari, and mussels. Prices are reasonable, typically 200–400 TL for a full meal.
- Meyhane — Traditional Turkish taverns serving meze (small dishes) alongside rakı and fish. Try the local white cheese, haydari (yogurt dip), and fresh salads.
- Çay Bahçesi — Tea gardens on the promenade serving tea, simit, and simple snacks with sea views.
- Market Stalls — Fresh produce, olives, and cheeses available at the small weekly market.
Where to drink?
Kumbağ's social life revolves around the waterfront meyhanes (taverns) and tea gardens. Turkish tea is the universal daytime beverage, served in tulip-shaped glasses with sea views. Rakı (anise-flavored spirit) accompanies evening meals, particularly with seafood. Ayran (yogurt drink) is refreshing in summer heat. Alcoholic drinks are widely available at meyhanes and restaurants. Tap water is not recommended for visitors; bottled water is sold everywhere.
