Sarkoy
Tekirdağ, Turkey
Why visit Sarkoy?
Şarköy is a coastal district and town in Tekirdağ Province, situated on the northern shore of the Sea of Marmara in Turkish Thrace, within two to three hours' travel west of Istanbul. The district stretches along a picturesque coastline backed by low mountains that rarely exceed 1,000 meters, creating a landscape of vineyards, olive groves, and rocky coves descending to pebble beaches and small harbors. The town itself, with a population of around 17,000, serves as the administrative center and main traveler hub, while smaller villages dot the coast east and west.
From antiquity this coast attracted Greek settlers, who grew into the majority population by the 19th century. The 1923 Treaty of Lausanne mandated population transfers, and Şarköy's Greeks were deported and replaced by Turks from Macedonia in northern Greece. This history is visible in the ruined Greek churches, monasteries, and the well-preserved stone villages that line the coast. The district's name derives from its ancient Greek designation, and several villages retain their old names alongside their Turkish ones—Gaziköy was Ganos, Mürefte was Myriophyton ("a thousand vineyards"), and Uçmakdere was Vidimo ("the heavenly stream").
The climate is Mediterranean with hot, mostly dry summers (though occasional downpours occur) and chilly, rainy winters with occasional snow. This climate supports extensive vineyards and olive groves, making the region a significant wine-producing area. Spring, with fruit blossoms, and autumn, with the grape harvest, are particularly pleasant times to visit. Şarköy remains primarily a domestic resort, without the international hotel chains or tour operators that have transformed other Turkish coastal towns, retaining an authentic, unhurried character.

By Plane
The nearest airport is Istanbul's new airport (IST), approximately 170 km east. Istanbul Seyahat and other bus companies run from IST to Tekirdağ, from where local buses or dolmuşes continue to Şarköy. Çorlu Airport (TEQ) is closer at about 100 km northeast but has infrequent flights from Ankara and limited public transport.
By Train
The nearest railway station is at Çorlu, approximately 80 km northeast, with trains running twice daily from Istanbul. From Çorlu, take a dolmuş to Tekirdağ, then a local bus or dolmuş to Şarköy (approximately one hour, 20 TL).
By Car / Road
From Istanbul, follow the main highway west to Silivri, then D-110/E84 through Tekirdağ, following signs for Keşan before branching south on D-555 for Şarköy. The drive takes about two to two and a half hours. For a scenic coastal route, follow the road from Tekirdağ through Kumbağ and then via hairpin bends past olive groves to Gaziköy and west—beautiful but beware of rock falls and no services until Mürefte. A third route comes over the hills from the north through Ormanlı to Güzelköy and Hoşköy, surfaced in 2023 but still featuring loose gravel and hairpin turns.
Metro Turizm buses run from Istanbul Bayrampaşa via Silivri and Tekirdağ to Şarköy in just over two hours, departing every couple of hours during the day with some overnight services. Pamukkale buses also stop at Tekirdağ on their way to Çanakkale, with connections to Şarköy hourly (approximately one hour, 20 TL).
Dolmuşes run along the coast between Şarköy and Gaziköy every 30 minutes between 07:30 and 19:00. Services become sparser further east—Uçmakdere may have only one or two morning departures returning mid-afternoon, making day trips difficult without a car. There is no public transport on the winding coastal road east of Gaziköy. Car rental offices are available in Tekirdağ, though international visitors may prefer to hire from Istanbul. Walking is the best way to explore the compact town centers of Şarköy and the smaller villages.
What are the things to do?
Gazi Süleymanpaşa Cami — The most attractive of Şarköy's half-dozen mosques, located 200 meters inland from the harbour. A fine example of Ottoman provincial architecture.
Kutman Wine Museum — Housed in a historic winery building on the waterfront of Mürefte, displaying ancient equipment and artifacts from the region's winemaking tradition.
Hoşköy Lighthouse — A 20-meter tower built by the French in 1861, still in service, perched on a cliff west of the village. Reached by a short walk from the main road.
St Ioannis Theologos Monastery — A ruin in the hills 1 km north of Hoşköy, built in 1865 over a Byzantine or earlier religious site. Located within the Melen vineyard, which hopes to restore it.
Uçmakdere — A picturesque village clinging above a valley, retaining most of its traditional wooden houses. The name means "the heavenly stream."
Güzelköy — A well-preserved Ottoman village with stone houses, a ruined bathhouse, and an old mosque.
Wine Tasting — Visit Melen Winery in Hoşköy for tours and tastings (May–October). Chateau Kalpak and Cansin's Wineyard are also accessible on D-120 west towards the Gallipoli peninsula. Local grape varieties include Karasakız (red) and Narince (white), alongside international cultivars like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Beach Swimming — Şarköy's best beaches are east of the harbour. Elsewhere, beaches are a thin strip with groynes to retard erosion. Eriklice has nice beaches with clear water.
Hiking — Mountains rise to 900+ meters behind the coast. A popular route ascends Mount Işıklar (Ganos) starting from Uçmakdere, offering dramatic views of the Marmara coast.
Paragliding — The Tekirdağ Paragliding Club (TEYAK) conducts tandem and solo flights from the hills around Yeniköy, landing at Ayvasıl beach east of Uçmakdere.

Where to drink?
Şarköy is in the heart of Turkey's Thrace wine region, and wine is the drink of choice. The area produces both international varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot) and local cultivars like Karasakız and Narince. Melen Winery in Hoşköy offers tours and tastings from May through October. Chateau Kalpak and Cansin's Wineyard are further west towards the Gallipoli peninsula. Turkish tea is ubiquitous, served in tulip-shaped glasses at every tea garden and restaurant. Ayran (yogurt drink) is refreshing in summer heat. Tap water is not recommended for visitors; bottled water is widely available.
