Sarioglan

Kayseri, Turkey

Why visit Sarioglan?

Sarıoğlan is a district town on the plain of eastern Kayseri Province, named after a Turkmen community recorded in the area since at least the 16th century (an Ottoman tax register of 1530 lists it as "Saru-Oğlan" under the Zülkadiriye beylik). Mounds and tumuli in the district point to settlement going back to the Bronze Age, with the wider area passing successively through Hittite, Phrygian, Persian, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine control. The modern town centre was rebuilt after a 1948 flood on the Kesdoğan stream destroyed the original settlement; Sarıoğlan became a district in 1960.
