Sariz

Kayseri, Turkey

Why visit Sariz?

Sarız is a highland district in southeastern Kayseri Province, at the point where the Central Anatolian, Eastern Anatolian, and Mediterranean regions meet, at about 1,560 m elevation. Its highland pastures (yaylas) were historically used by semi-nomadic Avşar Turkmen groups, who wintered near Kadirli and Ceyhan in Adana Province and summered on Sarız's uplands before largely settling permanently from the 1840s onward; the district was briefly the seat of the Eratna Beylik after 1343. Local tradition ties the name "Sarız" to the yellow (sarı) spring flowers along the district's streams.
