Ekinozu
Kahramanmaraş, Turkey
Why visit Ekinozu?
Ekinözü (historically called Celâ) is a mountain district town in northern Kahramanmaraş Province in southeastern Turkey. Positioned at an elevation of approximately 1,250 meters along the southern fringe of the Elbistan basin and against the steep northern slopes of Mount Berit (Berit Dağı), the district has a resident population of roughly 10,000 spread across the central town and surrounding agricultural villages.
The town is known across southeastern and central Anatolia for its mineral spring cluster (Ekinözü İçmeleri), comprising three cold, carbonated springs known locally as Acı Su (bitter water): Yukarı (Upper), Orta (Middle), and Aşağı (Lower) İçme. High in bicarbonate, magnesium, and calcium with visible iron sediment, these effervescent waters draw thousands of domestic visitors every summer for drinking cures and therapeutic mud baths aimed at kidney, gall bladder, and digestive conditions. Outside the spring season, the town functions as a quiet farming center focused on wheat, barley, chickpeas, and sugar beets.
The local climate is severe continental. Winters are harsh and heavily snowy, with sub-zero temperatures and icy mountain roads. Summers are sunny and warm, with daytime highs around 28°C to 34°C (82°F to 93°F) and sharp drops in temperature after sunset due to mountain breezes.
