Why visit Sultanhisar?
Sultanhisar is an agricultural district town in the Büyük Menderes River valley of Aydın Province, situated 30 km east of Aydın city center and 15 km west of Nazilli. Positioned along the northern edge of the fertile valley floor beneath the Cevizli Mountains, the town functions as a regional center for strawberry growing, fig cultivation, and olive oil production. The district includes the archaeological site of Nysa on the Maeander, located 3 km north of the town center, and the sub-district town of Atça, rebuilt after 1924 with an 8-street radial layout inspired by Paris's Place de l'Étoile.
The local economy relies primarily on agriculture, with Sultanhisar supplying a significant portion of Turkey's fresh strawberry crop and dried Sarılop figs. The town hosts the International Sultanhisar Strawberry and Agricultural Festival every May. Historically, the area gained national recognition during the Turkish War of Independence as the site of the Malgaç Raid on June 16, 1919, when local irregular forces under Yörük Ali Efe executed the first successful ambush against occupying troops in the Aegean region.
Sultanhisar experiences a Mediterranean climate characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Peak summer temperatures regularly exceed 38°C (100°F) in July and August. Winter daytime temperatures range between 6°C and 13°C (43–55°F). Spring and autumn bring moderate temperatures between 18°C and 26°C (64–79°F), providing the most practical conditions for visiting open-air historical sites.
