Scarborough
Tobago, Trinidad and Tobago
Why visit Scarborough?
Scarborough is the administrative capital and largest town on Tobago, perched on a hillside overlooking Rockly Bay on the island's southwestern coast. With a population of roughly 17,000, it serves as the island's main port (receiving ferries from Port of Spain), commercial centre, and government seat. The town is crowned by Fort St George, a restored 18th-century British fort with commanding views over the bay and surrounding hills.
The town has a compact, hilly layout centred on the main market area and Bacolet Street. While it lacks the tourist-oriented charm of Crown Point or the north-coast villages, Scarborough is the most authentic Tobagonian town — a working place where locals shop, conduct business, and socialise. The climate is tropical year-round, with temperatures averaging 30°C highs and 23°C lows. The wet season (June–November) brings heavier rainfall, with July through November being the wettest months (150–220 mm monthly).

By Plane
A.N.R. Robinson International Airport (TAB) is at Crown Point, 10 km west of Scarborough centre. Taxis from the airport to Scarborough cost TT$20–30 for local taxis (flagged down near KFC) or TT$90+ for hire taxis. A bus from the airport area costs TT$3 but tickets must be bought in advance. The drive takes about 15–20 minutes.
By Car / Road
Scarborough is on the coastal road loop. From Crown Point, it is a 15-minute drive west. From Charlotteville on the northeast coast, the drive is about 1 hour via the Windward Road. From Castara on the northwest coast, approximately 40 minutes. Roads are narrow and winding but paved throughout.
By Ferry
The inter-island ferry from Port of Spain (Trinidad) docks at Scarborough's port. There are 3 sailings daily, with the journey taking at least 3 hours. Tickets can be purchased online from the Trinidad and Tobago inter-island ferry service. The fare is approximately TT$50 per person; vehicle transport is also available.
Scarborough's centre is walkable, though the hilly terrain can be steep. Local taxis are the main form of transport — find them at stands near the market and along the main roads. Fares within town are TT$5–10. To head north to Black Rock or Castara, expect TT$10–20 from the Castries Street taxi stand (far cheaper than hire taxis). Rental cars are available from Genesis Rent a Car (+868 639-5555) and Stewart Auto Rentals on Kirk Street (+868 639-3397). Driving is on the left; a full island loop from Scarborough takes about 2–3 hours.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to eat?
Dining options in Scarborough are more limited than in Crown Point, and many places close early with unpredictable hours. Cow-heel soup and pig-tail soup are local staples found at street stalls and casual eateries around the market area. Chinese restaurants stay open later than most other options. For a broader menu, head to Crown Point (15 minutes away). Expect to pay TT$20–60 for a casual meal. KFC and Subway are available for familiar options.
Where to drink?
The nightlife scene is modest. Rum shops (local bars) are scattered through the town — try puncheon rum (locally distilled, at least 70% alcohol — pace yourself). Carib and Stag beers are the standard lagers. Non-alcoholic options include fresh coconut water from roadside vendors and locally made mauby (a bark-based drink). Most bars close by 10–11 PM.
