Diego Martin is a region in northwestern Trinidad, stretching from the outskirts of Port of Spain westward to the Chaguaramas peninsula. The region encompasses the Diego Martin valley, a lush residential area flanked by the Northern Range, as well as the coastal communities of Carenage and Chaguaramas. It is one of the more affluent and developed areas of Trinidad, with a mix of suburban neighbourhoods, shopping centres, and recreational areas.
The region is named after the Diego Martin River, which flows through the valley from the Northern Range to the Gulf of Paria. The landscape varies from the steep, forested hills of the Northern Range in the north and east to the flat coastal plain along the western shore. The climate is tropical, with a wet season from June to December and a drier period from January to May. Temperatures average 25–31°C year-round.
Diego Martin is primarily a residential and suburban area, but it offers notable attractions including the Chaguaramas peninsula with its beaches, marinas, and the legacy of the former US naval base, as well as the lush Maraval valley and the Paramin lookout with panoramic views over Port of Spain.
When is the best time to visit?
The dry season from January to May is ideal for visiting, with lower humidity and less rainfall. The Chaguaramas peninsula is enjoyable year-round but best in the dry months for water activities. Carnival season (February/March) brings festivities across the wider Port of Spain area. The Paramin village hosts traditional parang music celebrations around Christmas time (November–December).

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Diego Martin is well connected to Port of Spain by the Western Main Road and the Diego Martin Main Road. Maxi taxis and route taxis run frequently between Diego Martin and Port of Spain (TT$5–8, about 15–20 minutes). The Chaguaramas peninsula is served by the Western Main Road, which can be congested during rush hours. For exploring the hillside areas (Paramin, Cameron Road), a private vehicle or taxi is recommended as roads are steep and winding.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Diego Martin's food culture reflects the diversity of western Trinidad. Doubles, roti, and street food are widely available from vendors along the main roads. The Carenage waterfront is known for fresh seafood, including fried shark and bake. The Chaguaramas area has several restaurants catering to the boating and recreation crowd. Chinese-Trinidadian and Creole cuisine are also well represented.
What is the culture like?
The region has a strong parang music tradition, particularly in the hillside village of Paramin, where parang groups perform during the Christmas season (November–January). The Chaguaramas area hosts various boat regattas and water sports events throughout the year. The broader Port of Spain Carnival celebrations extend into Diego Martin, with mas camps and fete events during the Carnival season.
