Why visit Aranyaprathet?

Aranyaprathet (อรัญประเทศ), also called Aran, is the busiest land-border crossing between Thailand and Cambodia, sitting opposite Cambodia's Poipet. It is the most popular overland route for travellers between Bangkok and Siem Reap (Angkor Archaeological Park), and its identity is wholly shaped by that frontier: the border is 6 km south-east of town, and the sprawling Rong Kluea Market (also Rongkleu Market) sits immediately next to Thai immigration, drawing shoppers, traders, and scam-operators alike.

The town's focus is the crossroads near the train station, with roads radiating to the station (north-east), the border (south-east), the clock tower and town centre (south-west), and the bus station (north-west). Aranyaprathet is functional rather than beautiful — a transit town where most travellers spend a single night before crossing. But it has a raw frontier energy, enormous markets, and the distinction of being at the gateway of one of Southeast Asia's classic overland journeys.

The climate mirrors inland eastern Thailand: the cool-dry season (November–February) is most comfortable for the border run; the hot season (March–May) is scorching; the rains (May–October) can make the roads muddy but the market stays open daily.

Border opening hours: 08:00–20:00. There is no time difference between Thailand and Cambodia.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest major airport is Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi (BKK). Regular buses connect Suvarnabhumi's airport bus terminal directly to Aranyaprathet throughout the day. From Don Mueang (DMK), take a bus to Mo Chit and get off at Rangsit to pick up an Aran-bound bus.

By Train

Two 3rd-class trains run daily from Bangkok's Hualamphong Station to Aranyaprathet. Departures: 05:55 (arriving 11:20) and 13:05 (arriving 18:05). The fare is 48 baht. The train has no air-conditioning but offers a scenic journey through the countryside. To go directly to the border, get off at Ban Klong Luk station (right at the crossing), not Aranyaprathet station.

By Car / Road

Buses from Bangkok's Mo Chit terminal (every 30 min, 207 baht 1st class, 160 baht 2nd class, 4–5 hr) and from Ekamai terminal (hourly, 200 baht, 4.5–5.5 hr) are frequent and reliable. Buses also link Aranyaprathet with Nakhon Ratchasima, Chachoengsao, Chanthaburi, Pattaya, Rayong, Surat Thani, and other Thai cities. The main bus station is about 400 m north-west of the crossroads; a secondary station operates from Rong Kluea Market.

Border crossing: To reach the border from town, take a tuk-tuk (60 baht after haggling, 15 min) or a songthaew (15 baht) from the 7-Eleven near Rong Kluea Market. Driver scams are rife — insist on being taken directly to the border.

Aranyaprathet town is compact and walkable. Tuk-tuks within town cost around 20 baht. Songthaews (shared pick-up trucks) run between the 7-Eleven in Rong Kluea Market and central Aran for 15 baht. A tuk-tuk to the border is about 60 baht; a motorbike taxi is about 40 baht.

Motorbikes can be rented from shops inside Rong Kluea Market (100–300 baht depending on duration, 08:00–18:00). Bicycles and golf carts are also available at the market. Caution: Police on Highway 33 occasionally set up road checks targeting drivers without a Thai licence; use side roads if possible.

What are the things to do?

  • Rong Kluea Market (Rongkleu Market) — One of Thailand's largest cross-border markets, selling cheap clothing, second-hand goods, electronics, and curiosities from Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, and China. Banks, cafes, convenience stores, and money exchanges on-site. Open daily.

  • Aranyaprathet Victory Gate (ประตูชัยอรัญประเทศ) — Twin gateposts on the Thai–Cambodian border at Ban Khlong Luek, marking the historic frontier.

  • Phra Siam Devadhiraj Replica (พระสยามเทวาธิราช) — A revered image taken to the frontier to protect soldiers and residents; a sacred symbol for the people of Aranyaprathet.

  • Wat Anubanphot (Wat Khao Noi) — A hilltop temple with a striking square-based ordination hall and a pointed traditional Thai spired roof.

  • Cross to Cambodia — The main reason most people come. Exit Thailand at the Khlong Luek border post, walk across the bridge, and enter Cambodia at Poipet for onward travel to Siem Reap. Do not pay intermediaries: the Cambodian tourist visa costs US$30 and is issued at the official immigration office 50 m past the bridge.

  • Shop at Rong Kluea Market — Spend a few hours browsing the vast bazaar for genuine bargains in clothing, handicrafts, and curios.

  • Day trip to the Khmer ruins — Prasat Sdok Kok Thom and Prasat Khao Noi are within easy reach of Aranyaprathet by private transport.
