Why visit Song?
Song (สอง) is the northernmost district of Phrae province, covering 1,625 km² with a population of approximately 54,000. It sits in the Phi Pan Nam Range, bordering Lampang, Phayao, and Nan provinces. The district is historically significant as the setting of the classic Thai love tragedy Lilit Phra Lo, which inspired the Phra That Phra Lo chedi, said to contain the remains of King Phra Lo and his two lovers.
Song was originally named Mueang Song, then briefly renamed Ban Klang in 1917, before reverting to Song (dropping the "Mueang" prefix) in 1939. The district headquarters is in Ban Klang sub-district. The landscape is dominated by forested mountains and the Yom River valley. Mae Yom National Park is the district's most significant natural attraction.
