Why visit Chat Trakan?

Chat Trakan (ชาติตระการ) is the northernmost district of Phitsanulok province, bordering Laos to the east. It covers 1,586 km² with a population of about 41,500. The district is mountainous and heavily forested — more than 90% is reserved forest area, giving it the lowest prosperity index in the province.

The area was historically part of Nakhon Thai district and became a minor district in 1969 before being upgraded to a full district in 1974. It was a conflict zone during the Thai–Laotian Border War (1987–1988). Today its main attractions are the Namtok Chat Trakan National Park and the Luang Prabang mountain range. The climate is tropical savanna with a cool season (Nov–Feb), hot season (Mar–May), and rainy season (Jun–Oct).
