Why visit Dok Khamtai?
Dok Khamtai (ดอกคำใต้) is a district town in central Phayao Province, located along Highway 1 between Phayao town and Chiang Rai. The name refers to the sponge tree (Acacia farnesiana), known in Thai as dok kham. The district was originally created in 1832, later abolished and incorporated into Mueang Phayao, and re-established as a full district in 1965.
It is a predominantly agricultural area, with rice farming forming the economic backbone. The Ing River is the main water course. The town serves as a local market and service centre for surrounding villages and is a gateway to Doi Phu Nang National Park.
The climate follows the Northern Thai pattern: cool season (Nov–Feb), hot season (Mar–May), and rainy season (Jun–Oct). The cool season is the best time to visit.
