Railay
Krabi, Thailand
Why visit Railay?
Railay (also spelled Rai Leh, อ่าวไร่เล) is a stunning peninsula on the Andaman Coast of Krabi Province, cut off from the mainland by towering limestone cliffs and accessible only by boat. It is world-famous as a rock climbing hotspot, attracting climbers from across the globe to its superb limestone faces. The peninsula has four main areas: Phra Nang Beach (southern tip, voted one of the world's most beautiful beaches), Railay West (white sand beach with shallow water, great for swimming), Railay East (mangrove side with budget accommodation and restaurants), and Ton Sai (a cove around the corner popular with backpackers and climbers).
Railay has a tropical climate with the best conditions from November to April. The dry season offers perfect beach and climbing weather, while May to October brings rain and rougher seas. The peninsula is car-free — all transport is on foot or by boat — which gives it a uniquely relaxed, pedestrian-friendly atmosphere.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
By Plane
Krabi International Airport (KBV IATA) is the nearest airport, about 40 km away. From the airport, take a shuttle or songthaew to Ao Nang (150 baht) or Krabi Town (90 baht), then a longtail boat to Railay. From Ao Nang, longtails depart constantly from the east end of the beach (10 min, 100 baht per person). From Krabi Town, longtails take about 30 minutes from the Chao Fah Pier.
By Car / Road
Railay is only reachable by boat. Drive to Ao Nang or Krabi Town, where parking is available, then take a longtail. Regular ferries also connect Railay to Ko Lanta, Ko Phi Phi, and Phuket in high season.
Walking is the only practical way to get around Railay. It is a 5–10 minute walk between any of the main beaches and landmarks, except for Ton Sai which is a longer hike through the jungle. There are no cars, and the bumpy paths make even bicycles impractical. Longtail boats connect the peninsula's beaches for a small fee.
What are the things to do?
Phra Nang Beach — A jaw-droppingly beautiful white sand beach on the southern tip, framed by massive limestone cliffs. Excellent swimming. The beach is busy in high season with longtail boats and day-trippers but retains its beauty.
Phra Nang Cave and Shrine — A small cave at the north end of Phra Nang Beach featuring dozens of carved red-tipped phalluses donated by fishermen seeking favour from the drowned princess spirit who gave the beach its name.
Phra Nang Cave (Diamond Cave) — On the east side of the peninsula. An interesting cave with glittering mineral formations, accessible via a short lit boardwalk (small entrance fee). A common stop on day trips from Ao Nang and Phuket.
Viewpoint and Lagoon — A 20–25 minute climb from the path between East Railay and Phra Nang Beach rewards with panoramic views of the peninsula. A further steep, rocky descent leads to the hidden Sa Phra Nang lagoon. This route is dangerous in wet conditions and not advisable without proper footwear.
Rock climbing — Railay is one of the world's premier rock climbing destinations with over 700 bolted routes up limestone faces. Climbing is graded on the French scale and ranges from beginner to expert. King Climbers and Real Rocks Climbing School (+66 80 7181351) offer courses and guide services. Gear rental is widely available.
Kayaking — Several bungalow resorts on Railay West rent sea kayaks (600 baht half-day, 1,000 baht full-day). Paddle around the limestone islets off Phra Nang Beach, through sea caves, or cross to Ko Poda.
Diving and snorkelling — Railay has a dive shop offering certification and trips to dive sites including the King Cruiser wreck (a car ferry that sank in 1997). Snorkelling is moderate around the peninsula; better spots are reached by chartered longtail.
Midnight swimming — On dark nights, bioluminescence in the water lights up like a Christmas tree when disturbed — a spectacular natural phenomenon best appreciated with goggles.
Beach relaxation — Railay West and Phra Nang Beach are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and watching climbers scale the surrounding cliffs.
