Ao Luek
Krabi, Thailand
Why visit Ao Luek?
Ao Luek (อ่าวลึก) is a district town in Krabi Province, about 50 km north of Krabi Town on the main road to Phang Nga and Phuket. Unlike the coastal resort areas of Krabi, Ao Luek is a quiet inland town surrounded by limestone karst scenery, caves, and river systems. It is primarily used as a jumping-off point for cave and kayaking adventures rather than a destination in itself.
The climate is tropical with the best visiting conditions during the dry season from November to April. The wet season from May to October can make some cave and river activities more challenging but the landscape is at its lushest.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
By Plane
Krabi International Airport (KBV IATA) is about 45 km south of Ao Luek. A taxi from the airport costs approximately 600–800 baht. Alternatively, take a Phuket-bound bus or minivan from the airport and ask to be dropped at the Ao Luek junction.
By Car / Road
Ao Luek is on Hwy 4 (Phetkasem Road), the main highway linking Krabi to Phang Nga and Phuket. Regular buses between Krabi Town and Phuket pass through the town. From Krabi Town, buses depart every 30–60 minutes. The journey takes about 45 minutes and costs around 50–80 baht.
Hiring a car or motorbike in Krabi Town is the most practical way to explore the area's attractions, which are spread out along rural roads. Local motorcycle-taxis are available in the town for short trips to caves and temples. There is no public transport network within the district.
What are the things to do?
Tam Pet (Diamond Cave) — About 5 km from town, signposted from Hwy 4. A cave at a Buddhist temple featuring sparkling formations. The attendant monk will lend you a torch. The cave is a couple of hundred metres long with mud on the floor — cleaning facilities are available at the temple. A 100 baht offering is customary.
Tam Lot — A "drive-through" cavern accessible by kayak or longtail. You enter one side and emerge from the other. Water drips from the ceiling so expect to get wet.
Tam Pii Hua Toe (Big Headed Ghost Cave) — A cave accessible only by kayak or longtail boat from Bor Tor Pier. Tours can be booked at hotels in Krabi Town. The cave features ancient carvings and the cave roof has openings that let in daylight. An hour-long longtail tour costs about 400 baht.
Cave kayaking — The main reason to visit Ao Luek. Guided kayak tours take you through Tam Lot and Tam Pii Hua Toe, combining cave exploration with paddling through scenic mangroves and limestone karst scenery. Tours typically include lunch and last 3–4 hours.
Longtail cave tours — If kayaking is not your preference, longtail boats can be hired at Bor Tor Pier for cave tours.
Scenic drives — The surrounding countryside of limestone karst hills, rubber plantations, and mangroves is worth exploring by motorbike or car.
