Koani
Zanzibar South, Tanzania
Why visit Koani?
Koani is the small administrative capital of Zanzibar South, located inland about 8 km from the east coast on the main road connecting Stone Town to the southern beaches. It is a compact market town housing the regional government offices, a small hospital, and a handful of shops and eateries. Unlike the beach villages of Paje and Jambiani, Koani sees very few tourists and retains a quiet, everyday Zanzibari atmosphere. It serves as a transport junction: daladalas from Stone Town terminate or pass through here before fanning out to the various coastal villages. The town has a small weekly produce market and is surrounded by cassava farms and cashew orchards.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
Koani is on the main Stone Town–Paje road, about 35 km from Stone Town. Dala-dalas from Stone Town (Mkunazini terminal) run regularly and take about 40 minutes. A taxi from Stone Town costs roughly TZS 50,000–70,000.
The town centre is small and walkable. For the surrounding farms, cashew orchards, and the beaches further east, boda-boda (motorbike taxis) are available.
What are the things to do?
Koani Market — a small but lively local market, best on Saturday morning when farmers bring fresh produce, cassava, and tropical fruit.
Zanzibar South Regional Office — the government administrative building, a modest modern structure.
Koani Mosque — the village mosque at the town centre, typical of Zanzibar's stone-built Islamic architecture.
Cashew orchards — the low trees and orchards surrounding Koani produce some of Zanzibar's best cashew nuts.
Walk the market — buy fresh passion fruit, jackfruit, and cashew nuts from the growers.
Boda-boda tour — hire a boda-boda for a 1-hour ride through the farms and coastal plain to the east coast viewpoint.
Birdwatching — the farmland and bush around Koani host weaverbirds, sunbirds, and palm-nut vultures.
